STOMPwasformedbyBritishmusiciansLukeCresswellandSteveMcNicholas.Theymetintheearly1980swhentheywerebothworkingasbuskers,theBritishtermforstreetperformers(表演者).CresswellandMcNicholaswerepartofabuskinggroupcalledPookiesnackenburgerthatbecameverypopularthroughoutBritain.
Cresswellwasadrummer(鼓手)forthegroup.Becausetheyperformedonthestreet,hecouldnotsetupatraditionaldrumset.Instead,heworeonedrumthathungaroundhisshoulders.Tobeabletomakedifferentsounds,Cresswellbeganbeatingoneverydayobjectsthathecouldfindduringperformances.ThiscreativedrummingledtotheideaforSTOMP.
