Entertainmentisincreasinglyanelectronicactivityrelatedtoconsumingsomeformofamediaproduct.IntheUnitedStates,forinstance,televisionrepresentsmoreleisuretimethanallotherentertainmentactivitiescombined.Adultfemalesviewoverfivehoursdaily,whilemaleswatchfourhoursandchildrenaveragethreeandone-halfhours.Manyotherpopularformsofentertainment,suchasradio,musicalconcerts,moviesandnewamusementparksarealsoinfluencedbyelectronics.

Contemporaryentertainmentfrequentlybecomesastatussymbolforpeopleofallagestoestablishameaningfulidentity.Teenagersaremostsusceptibletothistypeofidentityformation.Theywearshirts,forexample,thatpubliclyadvertisetheirfavoriterockmusicgroups.Stereomusicsystemsarenotjustameansoflisteningtomusic,butformanyteenstheyarealsoasymbolofculturalpowerandpersonalculturalrelevance.Infact,accesstoadult-orientedvideomovies,suchasR-ratedfilms,isanimportantsignofateenager’scomingofageinmanycommunities.
