Morethan315billionpoundsofplasticlittertheworld’soceanstoday.Mostoftheplasticisgarbagefromtownsandcities,aswellastrashthatpeopleleaveonbeaches.rainwater,winds,andhightidesbringthetrashintotheoceanorintoriversthatleadtotheocean.Onceitisunderthewaves,theplasticbeginstobreakupintosmallerandsmallerpieces.Itoftencollectsinspotscalledgarbagepatches,whichspreadoverlargeareasoftheocean.
Thousandsofmarineanimals----includingwhales,seaturtles,andfish----dieeachyearfromeatingorgettingstuckinplasticbagsandotheritems.Plasticpiecescanalsoinjurecoralandkillseagrass.
WashedAshoreandotherorganizationsareworkingtostopthatfromhappening.Since2010,WashedAshorevolunteershavecollected38,000poundsofplastictrashfrommorethan3000milesofbeaches.TheyhelpedPozzicreatemorethan60sculpturesofmarinecreaturesthatwereharmedbyplasticpollution.

Itisnotclearexactlywhyspendingmoretimeoutsidewouldbenefitchildren’seyesight,theresearcherssaid.However,someresearchhassuggestedthatthehigherlevelsoflightintensityfoundoutdoorsmayincreasethereleaseofthechemicaldopamine(多巴胺)oftheeye.Inturn,dopamineisknowntorestrainthetypeofgrowthintheeyethatisassociatedwithnearsightedness.
