Bythe1980s,Ballard'sinterestschanged.Hedevelopedunmannedvehiclestoexploretheoceanbottom.Hisfirstfind,thewellknownshipTitanic,madeBallardfamous.Hewasnothappywithjustonebigfind,however.Helookedforandfoundotherwellknownships.OnewastheGermanbattleshipBismarck.AnotherwastheUSS.Yorktown,anaircraftcarrier(航空母舰)thatsankduringWorldWarⅡ.
