我天生乐观，坚信人类凭创造力和聪明才智可以让世界日益美妙，这一设想一直根植于我的内心深处。

ForaslongasIcanremember,I’velovedlearningnewthingsandsolvingproblems.SowhenIsatdownatacomputerforthefirsttimeinseventhgrade,Iwashooked.It’swasaclunkyandteletypemachinethatbarelydoanythingcomparedtothecomputerwehavetoday.Butitchangedmylife.

自从记事起，我就热衷于接触新事物、挑战难题。

可想而知，我上七年级时第一次坐在计算机前是何等着迷，如入无我之境。

那是一台锵锵作响的旧牌机器，和我们今天拥有的计算机相比，它相当逊色几乎一无所用，但正是它改变了我的生活。

WhenmyfriendPaulAllenandIstaredMicrosoft30yearsago,wehadavisionof“acomputeroneverydeskandineveryhome,”whichprobablysoundedalittletoooptimisticatatimewhenmostcomputerswerethesizeofrefrigerators.Butwebelievethatpersonalcomputerwouldchangetheworld.Andtheyhave.

30年前，我和朋友保罗·艾伦创办微软时，我们幻想实现”在每个家庭、在每张办公桌上都有一台计算机”，这在大多数的计算机体积如同冰箱的尺寸的年代，听起来有点异想天开。

但是我们相信个人电脑将改变世界。

Ibelievethatcomputersarethemostincredibletoolwecanusetofeedourcuriosityandinventiveness-tohelpussolveproblemsthateventhesmartestpeoplecouldn’tsolveontheirown.Computerhavetransformedhowwelearn,givingkidseverywhereawindowintoalloftheworld’sknowledge.They’rehelpingusbuildcommunicatesaroundthethingswecareaboutandtostayclosetothepeoplewhoareimportanttous,nomatterwheretheyare.

我相信计算机是我们用来满足好奇心及发明创造的最神奇的工具--有了它们的帮助，甚至是最聪明的人凭自身力量无法应对的难题都将迎刃而解。

计算机已经改变了我们的学习方式，为全球各地的孩子们开启了一扇通向大千世界知识的窗户。

它可以帮我们围绕我们关注的事物建立”群”，让我们和那些对自己重要的人保持密切联系，不管他们身处何方。

就像我的朋友沃伦·布非一样，我为每天都能做自己热爱的事情而感到无比幸运。

他称之为”踢踏舞工作”。

我在微软的工作永远充满挑战，但使我一直坚持”踢踏舞工作”的是我们向人们展示某些新成果的那些时刻，当他们看到计算机能辨认笔迹、语音或者能存储值得保留一辈子的照片时就会赞不绝口：

”我不敢相信个人电脑竟如此万能”。

Butforallthecoolthingsthatapersoncandowithapc,therearelotsotherwayswecanputourcreativityandintelligencetoworktoimproveourworld.Therearestillfartoomanypeopleintheworldwhosemostbasicneedsgounmet.Everyyear,forexample,millionsofpeoplediefromdiseasesthatareeasytopreventortreatinthedevelopedworld.但是，除了能用电脑做出很酷的事情之外，我们还能通过许多别的方式在工作中发挥自己的创造力和聪明才智，以改善我们的世界。

全球仍有许许多多的人连最基本的生存需求都未能解决。

我相信，凭借人类与生俱来的发明创造能力和不畏艰难、坚忍不拔的品格，在我的有生之年里我们将在所有这些领域都创造出可喜的成就。

尊敬的bok校长，rudenstine前校长，即将上任的faust校长，哈佛集团的各位成员，监管理事会的各位理事，各位老师，各位家长，各位同学：

i’vebeenwaitingmorethan30yearstosaythis:

“dad,ialwaystoldyoui’dcomebackandgetmydegree.”

有一句话我等了三十年，现在终于可以说了：

“老爸，我总是跟你说，我会回来拿到我的学位的！

对我来说，哈佛的求学经历是一段非凡的经历。

校园生活很有趣，我常去旁听我没选修的课。

哈佛的课外生活也很棒，我在radcliffe过着逍遥自在的日子。

每天我的寝室里总有很多人一直待到半夜，讨论着各种事情。

因为每个人都知道我从不考虑第二天早起。

这使得我变成了校园里那些不安分学生的头头，我们互相粘在一起，做出一种拒绝所有正常学生的姿态。

那里的女生比男生多，而且大多数男生都是理工科的。

这种状况为我创造了最好的机会，如果你们明白我的意思。

可惜的是，我正是在这里学到了人生中悲伤的一课：

机会大，并不等于你就会成功。

oneofmybiggestmemoriesofharvardcameinjanuary1975,whenimadeacallfromcurrierhousetoacompanyinalbuquerquethathadbegunma-ki-ngtheworld’sfirstpersonalcomputers.iofferedtosellthemsoftware.

我在哈佛最难忘的回忆之一，发生在1975年1月。

那时，我从宿舍楼里给位于albuquerque的一家公司打了一个电话，那家公司已经在着手制造世界上第一台个人电脑。

我提出想向他们出售软件。

iworriedthattheywouldrealizeiwasjustastudentinadormandhanguponme.insteadtheysaid:

“we’renotquiteready,comeseeusinamonth,”whichwasagoodthing,becausewehadn’twrittenthesoftwareyet.fromthatmoment,iworkeddayandnightonthislittleextracreditprojectthatmarkedtheendofmycollegeeducationandthebeginningofaremarkablejourneywithmicrosoft.

我很担心，他们会发觉我是一个住在宿舍的学生，从而挂断电话。

但是他们却说：

“我们还没准备好，一个月后你再来找我们吧。

”这是个好消息，因为那时软件还根本没有写出来呢。

就是从那个时候起，我日以继夜地在这个小小的课外项目上工作，这导致了我学生生活的结束，以及通往微软公司的不平凡的旅程的开始。

不管怎样，我对哈佛的回忆主要都与充沛的精力和智力活动有关。

哈佛的生活令人愉快，也令人感到有压力，有时甚至会感到泄气，但永远充满了挑战性。

生活在哈佛是一种吸引人的特殊待遇……虽然我离开得比较早，但是我在这里的经历、在这里结识的朋友、在这里发展起来的一些想法，永远地改变了我。

你们比以前的学生，更多地了解世界是怎样的不平等。

在你们的哈佛求学过程中，我希望你们已经思考过一个问题，那就是在这个新技术加速发展的时代，我们怎样最终应对这种不平等，以及我们怎样来解决这个问题。
