AtthattimeinMexico,manypeoplebelievedthatIndianswerenotsmartenoughtoreadorlearn.Antonioknewthatwasnottrue.Indianshadbeenpreventedfromlearningbyalackofschools.ThefirstSpanishmissionaries(传教士)whocametoMexicohadeducatedthenativepeople.Infact,churchesfromSpainhadbuiltthefirstcollegeontheNorthAmericancontinent(大陆)fortheIndians.AsmoreSpanishcametoMexico,however,theIndianchildrenwerecrowdedoutoftheschools.

Benitowasagoodandbrightstudent,soAntoniodevelopedaplanforhim.In1821,whenBenitowasfifteen,Antoniodecidedtoenrollhiminaschoolforboys.AntoniotaughtBenitowhatheneededtopasstheentrancetestfortheschool.

Benitobecameastudentatthecollege.Hisstudiesweredifficult,andhewasteasedbecausehewastheonlyIndianstudentthere.Hesucceededinspiteofthesechallenges.Later,asthelawschanged,BenitowasabletoattendapubliccollegewithotherIndians.

BenitoJuarezcontinuedhiseducationandbecamealawyerand,muchlater,thePresidentofMexicofrom1861to1872.HeledtheMexicanpeopletovictoryovertheFrench,whotriedtoruleMexico,andfoughtfortherightsofIndians.HeisoneofthegreatheroesinMexicanhistory.
