Textingchangespeopleaswell.Intheirpaper,“InsightsintotheSocialandPsychologicalEffectsofSMS(ShortMessageService)TextMessaging”,twoBritishresearchersdistinguishedbetweentwotypesofmobilephoneusers:
the“talkers”andthe“texters”-thosewhoprefervoicetotextmessagesandthosewhoprefertexttovoice.
Theyfoundthatthemobilephone’sindividualityandprivacygavetexterstheabilitytoexpressawholenewouterpersonality.Texterswerelikelytoreportthattheirfamilywouldbesurprisediftheyweretoreadtheirtexts.Thissuggeststhattextingallowedtexterstopresentaself-imagethatdifferedfromtheonefamiliartothosewhoknewthemwell.
Anotherscientistwroteofthechangesthatmobileshavebroughttobodylanguage.Therearetwokindsthatpeopleusewhilespeakingonthephone.Thereisthe“speakeasy”:

thesepeoplefocusonthemselvesandkeepoutotherpeople.
Whocanblamethem?
Phonemeetingsgetcancelledorreformedandcamera-phonesintrude(侵入)onpeople’sprivacy.So,itisunderstandableifyourmobilemakesyounervous.Butperhapsyouneedn’tworrysomuch.Afterall,itisgoodtotalk.
