Jobinterviews,exams,medicaltests---we’veallwaitedandworriedovertheresults.Someluckypeoplecanwaitwithoutmuchworrying.Manyofus,however,getanxiousawaitingtheoutcome.

KateSweeny,aprofessorofpsychologyatUniversityofCaliforniaRiverside,studiesthesedifferencesinwaitingbehavior.Inherlateststudy,publishedintheJournalofPersonalityandSocialPsychology,sheandacolleaguestudied50lawschoolgraduateswaitingfortheresultsoftheCaliforniaBarExam(律师资格考试).Theytookdetailedsurveysabouttheparticipants'self-esteem,howwelltheymanageduncertainty,andwhethertheyweremoreoptimisticorpessimistic(悲观的).Theyalsolookedathowparticipantsmanagedexpectationsandhandledstress.

Notsurprisingly,theyfoundthatanoptimisticoutlookandbeingmorecomfortablewithuncertaintymadewaitinglessstressful.Itdidn'tmatterwhethertheparticipantsreportedhighself-esteemornot.Whatmatteredmostwaswhethertheyexpectedthebest.

“Iwassurprised,”saysSweeny.

Alsointerestingwasthatpeoplechangedastheygotclosertolearningtheresults.Atfirst,itwasharderforalloftheparticipantstodistractthemselves,andallofthem---evenoptimists---becamemorepessimisticastimewenton.

Expectingbadnewsandpreparingforfailuremaynotrelieveanxietywhilewaiting,butlateron,itgivespeopleasenseofcontrolovertheirfutures.

Similarly,it’simportantthatpeopledon’tattachtomuchofthemselvestotheresult.“Ifyouconvinceyourselfthebarexamis...justasillyexamyouhavetotakeanddoesn’treflectonyouroryourabilities,that...mighthelpyou..ifthenewsisbad,”shesays.

Worrierscantakecomfort,however.Sweenyfoundthatparticipantswhosuffered-morestresswerebetteratreceivingevenbadnews.Indeed,thosewhohadmoreanxietywhilewaitingfortheirbarexamresultsweremorelikelytoturnaroundandstartstudyingagainiftheyfailed.

Sweenyisrecentlystudyingtheeffectsofmindfulnessmeditation(正念冥想)forthosewhoareabsorbedinresults,asithelpspeoplecontroltheirthoughtsandemotions.Thetechniqueisperfectforthissituation,shesays.Waitingwillneverbeeasy,buthavingsomethingunderyourcontrolcouldmakeitmoreacceptable.

Thereisaproblemwithsettinggoals.ResearchersfromHarvard,theUniversityofPennsylvaniaandNorthwestern,foundthatoveremphasizinggoalsbasedonmeasurableoutcomesoftenleadstorisk-taking,unethical(不遣德的)behaviorandreducedmotivation.TheirresultswerepublishedinaHarvardBusinessSchoolreporttitledGoalsGoneWild:

TheSystematicSideEffectsofOver-PrescribingGoalSetting.

Whenyoubecomeoverlyfocusedonachievingthegoal,youmaylosesightofyouroriginalpurposeforaccomplishingthegoalinthefirstplace.Anotherdangerisactuallycompletingthegoalwithoutsettingaplanforwhat'snext.Forexample,somemarathonrunnersexperiencewhat'scalledthe"post-raceblues".Achievingyourgoalmaycauseyoutodropthegood-habitsthatgotyouthereinthefirstplace.Dietersoftenexperiencethisinwhat’scalled“yo-yodieting”whentheydropdowntoadesiredweight,butthengainalltheweightbackwhentheystarttheirbadhabitsagain.
