Thestudyfoundthatreducedconsumptionbuyingless,repairingitemsinsteadofreplacingthem,avoidingimpulsepurchasesandsoonwaslinkedtoahigherlevelofpersonalwell-beingandalowerlevelofpsychologicaldistress,butgreenbuyingdidnotshowsuchlinks.

Perhapsunsurprisingly,thestudyalsofoundthatyoungpeoplewithmorematerialisticvalueswerelesslikelytoengageinreducedconsumption.Thisgroupdid,however,engagewithbuyinggreenactivities.ResearcherSabrinaHelmsuggeststhatthismaybebecausebuyinggreenisstillbuyingsoitstillsatisfiesthematerialistsurgetoaccumulatenewitems.Thesepeoplearecalled‘greenmaterialists’.

However,greenmaterialistsmuststilldealwiththesameconsumption-relatedstressesasaveragematerialists.Ifyoubuyandownalotofstuff,ittakesupalotofheadspace.Youhavetoworryabouthowtopayforit,andyouhavetomanageallthestuff,worryingabouthowtokeepitsafeandhowtokeepitorganized.AsHelmnotes,“Thekeyistoreduceconsumptionandnotjustbuygreenstuff.Havinglessandbuyinglesscanactuallymakeusmoresatisfiedandhappier.”

Understandinghowmaterialisticvaluesaffectconsumerbehaviors,andhowthosebehaviorsinturnaffectpersonalwell-being,isimportant.However,Helmacknowledgesthatformanyconsumers,changingbehaviorstoconsumelesswillbechallenging.“We’vebeentoldsincechildhoodthatthere’saproductforeverythingandit’sOKtobuy,andit’sagoodthingbecausethat’showtheeconomyworks,”SheSaid
