Studentswishingtosafeguard(保护)theircareersagainstchangesinthejobmarketshouldchoosescienceratherthanartsdegrees,accordingtoasurveyofundergraduates(大学生).

Engineeringandchemistrywereconsideredtobethemost“futureproof”,astheyarethecoursesmostlikelytoleadtoanenduring(持久的)andadaptablecareer.

Butopinionsweresharplydividedoverwhichdegreeswerebestforfuture--proofcareers.

Thefindings,publishedtoday,comeafterEducationSecretaryNickyMorgansparkedcontroversywithclaimsthatteenagersshouldsteerclearoftheartsandhumanitiesandchoosescienceormathsubjectsiftheywanttoaccessthewidestrangeofjobs.

Shesaidthatinpreviousdecadesstudentswouldonlytakemathorscienceiftheywantedtopursueaspecificcareersuchasmedicineorpharmacy,butnowadaysthat“couldn’tbefurtherfromthetruth”.

“Ifyouwanttodosomethingdifferent,orevenifyoudidn’tknowwhatyouwantedtodo...thentheartsandhumanitieswerewhatyouchose,becausetheyareuseful--weweretold--forallkindsofjobs.Ofcoursenowweknowthatthatcouldn’tbefurtherfromthetruth,andthatthesubjectsthatkeeppeople’soptionsopenandunlockdoorstoallsortsofcareeraretheSTEM(science,technology,engineeringandmath)subjects.”
