本文首先阐述了机器翻译在国外以及中国的发展历程,然后介绍了机器翻译的优势及各种应用。

并通过具体实例对机器翻译和人工翻译进行了比较,总结出机器翻译存在的弊端,如机器翻译缺少可读性和流畅性，在处理多义词，句子结构，自动分词，语言和文化语境方面能力不足。

Machinetranslationisasub-fieldofnaturallanguageprocessingthatinvestigatestheuseofsoftwaretotranslatetextorspeechfromonenaturallanguagetoanother.Itiscloselyrelatedtocomputationallinguisticsandnaturallanguageunderstanding.

In1949,W.Weaverpublishedamemoontranslationinwhichtheideaofmachinetranslationwasfirstputforwardofficially.Sincethen,machinetranslationhasexperiencedupsanddowns.Itsdevelopmenthistorycanbedividedintofourperiods:

pioneeringperiod,frustrationperiod,recoveryperiodandthenewperiod.Theprogressandpotentialofmachinetranslationhavebeendebatedmuchthroughitshistory.Since1950s,anumberofscholarshavequestionedthepossibilityofachievingfullyautomaticmachinetranslationofhighquality.Somecriticsclaimthattherearein-principleobstaclestoautomizingthetranslationprocess（Madsen,2010:

174）.

Therearemanydifferentapproachestomachinetranslationandtheultimateaimofthemallistotranslateonelanguagetoanotherinanautomatedfashion.ThethreesystemsthathavedeliveredthebestresultsandthereforedeemedsuccessfulareRules-basedTranslation,StatisticalMachineTranslationandExample-basedTranslation

Machinetranslationhasrevolutionizedthewayoftraditionalmanualtranslation.Comparedtohumantranslation,machinetranslationhasmanyincomparableadvantages.GeoffreySamuelsson-Brown,atechnicalSwedishtranslatorhasillustratedsixmajoradvantagesofmachinetranslationinhisbookAPracticalGuideforTranslators:

◆Repetitiveorsimilartextsneedtobetranslatedonce.

◆Onceglossarieshavebeenenteredinthesystem,futuretranslationwillalwaysbeconsistentprovidingthetranslatorselectstheoptionofferedbytheterminologymanagementsystem.

◆Greaterspeedofdrafttranslation,therebyallowingmoretimeforqualitycontrol.

◆Acomputercanworkondrafttranslationatanytimeoftheday,thusa10,000wordtranslationthatmaytakeahumantranslatoraweektoproducecouldbedoneovernightreadyforeditingthenextmorning.

◆Reductioninproductioncosts,therebyproducinggreaterprofitability.

◆Betterqualitycontrolsincetextalreadyenteredinthesoftwarewillnotneedtobere-checkedifitcanbeidentifieduniquely（Brown-Samuelsson,2004:

77）.

Ontheotherhand,despitethespectacularadvancementinmachinetranslation,itstillhasmanydisadvantageswhencomparedtohumantranslation.Thebiggestbottleneckfacingmachinetranslationistheproblemofambiguity.Ambiguitycomesfromtwosources:

ambiguityoflanguageitselfandthetechnologicallimitationsofcomputer.Ambiguityoflanguageitselfmeansthatawordhasmorethanonemeaninginthelanguagetowhichthewordbelongs.Thelimitationofcomputermainlyreferstothedeficientabilityofautomaticwordsegmentation.Theproblemofambiguitywasfirstraisedin1950sbyYehoshuaBar-Hillel.Hepointedoutthatwithouta"universalencyclopedia",amachinewouldneverbeabletodistinguishbetweenthetwomeaningsofaword（Bar-Hillel,1960）.What’smore,machinetranslationlacksreadabilityandfluency.Itisdeficientwhendealingwithfiguresofspeech,linguisticandculturalcontext.

Atpresent,machinetranslationisabletomeetpeople’sallkindsofneedsoftranslationandiswidelyusedinmanydifferentfields.Fromthetypeofapplication,machinetranslationisusedforfourpurposes:

informationdistribution,informationassimilation,informationexchangeandinformationretrieval,ofwhichtheformertwoarethemajoruseofmachinetranslation.Informationdistributionreferstothetraditionalneedfortranslationsofgoodquality,particularlytheproductionofmaterialslikenews,laws,advertisings,productspecificationsetc.Heretheoutputofmachinetranslationsystemscansavetimeandcostsbyprovidingdrafttranslationswhicharetheneditedforpublication.Informationassimilationreferstotheneedofroughtranslationresultswhichmaybegrammaticallyimperfectandlexicallyawkwardbutconveythemainideaofthesourcetext.ThenotableriseofsocialnetworkingonthewebsiteinrecentyearshascreatedanothernichefortheapplicationofmachinetranslationsoftwareinutilitiessuchasFacebook,orinstantmessagingclientssuchasSkype,GoogleTalk,MSNMessenger,etc.Itallowsusersspeakingdifferentlanguagestocommunicatewitheachother.Machinetranslationapplicationshavealsobeenreleasedformostmobiledevices.Duetotheirportability,suchinstrumentshavecometobedesignatedasmobiletranslationtools,thusfacilitatingforeignlanguagelearningandunaccompaniedtraveltoforeigncountrieswithoutthehelpofahumantranslator.

Inthe21stcentury,duetotherapiddevelopmentoftheInternetandtheaccelerationofworldeconomicintegration,informationinthenetworkisexpandingquicklyandinternationalexchangesbecomemorefrequent.Sohowtoovercomethelanguagebarrierhasbecomeacommonconcernoftheinternationalcommunity.Ashumantranslationisfarfromsatisfactorytomeettheneeds,theuseofmachinetranslationtechnologytohelppeoplegetinformationquicklyhasbecomeaninevitabletrend.

AmericaninventorRayKurzweiloncepredictedthatby2029thequalityofmachinetranslationwouldreachthelevelofhumantranslation.Thispredictionhastriggeredheatedcontroversyintheacademiccommunity.Anyway,thecurrentdevelopmenttrendofmachinetranslationisfavorable.Itisbelievedthatmachinetranslationhaspromisingprospectsinthefuture.Aslongaslinguists,computerexperts,mathematiciansetcworkcollectively,allthebottlenecksfacingmachinetranslationwillbesolved.

Sinceitsemergencemachinetranslationhasembarkedonawindingandlongpathofdevelopment,whichcanbedividedintothefollowing4stages:

pioneeringperiod,frustrationperiod,recoveryperiodandthenewperiod.Featuringfastspeedandhighefficiency,machinetranslationhasrevolutionizedtraditionalmanualtranslation.Impressedbyitsvastadvantages,machinetranslationhasdrawnattentionfrommanycountries,whichhasconsequentlyfacilitateditsdevelopment.Ontheotherhand,machinetranslationisstillconfrontedwithvariousbottleneckstotackle.However,itisundeniablethatmachinetranslationhasachievedtremendousprogressandithasabroadfutureintermsoftechnologiesandapplications.
