  Oneofthemajorcausesofthisdesertadvanceispooragriculturallanduse,drivenbythepressuresofincreasingpopulation.Overgrazing一keepingtoomanyfarmanimalsontheland一meansthatgrassesandotherplantscannotrecover,andscarcewatersuppliesareexhausted.Overcultivation一tryingtogrowtoomanycropsonpoorland一resultsinthesoilbecomingevenlessfertileanddrier,andbeginningtobreakup.Soilerosion(侵蚀)follows,andthelandturnsintodesert.

  Anothercauseofdesertificationislossoftreecover.Treesarecutdownforuseasfuelandtoclearlandforagriculturaluse.Treerootshelptobindthesoiltogether,toconservemoisture,andtoprovideahabitatforotherplantsandanimals.Whentreesarecutdown,thesoilbeginstodryandloosen,windandrainerosionincrease,otherplantspeciesdie,andeventuallythefertiletopsoilmaybealmostentirelylost,leavingonlybarerockanddust.
