ABSTRACT
Grindingandpolishingareimportantstepsintheproductionofdecorativevitreousceramictiles.Differentcombinationsoffinishingwheelsandpolishingwheelsaretestedtooptimizetheirselection.Theresultsshowthatthesurfaceglossinessdependsnotonlyonthesurfacequalitybeforemachining,butalsoonthecharacteristicsoftheceramictilesaswellastheperformanceofgrindingandpolishingwheels.Theperformanceofthepolishingwheelisthekeyforagoodfinalsurfacequality.Thesurfaceglossinessafterfinishingmustbeabove208inordertogethigherpolishingqualitybecausefinishingwilllimitthemaximumsurfaceglossinessbypolishing.Theoptimizedcombinationofgrindingandpolishingwheelsforallthestepswillachieveshortermachiningtimesandbettersurfacequality.Noobviousrelationshipsarefoundbetweenthehardnessofceramictilesandsurfacequalityorthewearofgrindingwheels;therefore,thehardnessoftheceramictilecannotbeusedforevaluatingitsmachinability.

INTRODUCTION
Ceramictilesarethecommondecorationmaterialforfloorsandwallsof
hotel,office,andfamilybuildings.Nowadays,polishedvitreousceramictilesaremorepopularasdecorationmaterialthangeneralvitreousceramictilesastheycan

haveabeautifulglossondifferentcolors.Grindingandpolishingofceramictiles
playanimportantroleinthesurfacequality,cost,andproductivityofceramictiles
manufacturedfordecoration.Thegrindingandpolishingofceramictilesare
carriedoutinonepassthroughpolishingproductionlinewithmanydifferent
grindingwheelsorbymultipassesonapolishingmachine,wheredifferent
grindingwheelsareused.
Mostfactoriesutilizethegrindingmethodssimilartothoseusedforstone
machiningalthoughthemachiningofstoneisdifferentfromthatofceramictiles.
Vitreousceramictilesarethin,usually5–8mminthickness,andareasintered
material,whichpossesshighhardness,wearresistance,andbrittleness.Ingeneral,the
sinteringprocesscausessurfacedeformationinthetiles.Inthemachiningprocess,the
ceramictilesareunfixedandputontables.Thesecharacteristicswillcauseeasy
breakageandlowersurfacequalityifgrindingwheelorgrindingparametersare
unsuitable.Tomeettheneedsofceramictilesmachining,themachinery,grinding
parameters(pressure,feedspeed,etc.),andgrindingwheels(typeandmeshsizeof
abrasive,bond,structureofgrindingwheel,etc.)mustbeoptimized.
Previousworkshavebeenreportedinthefieldofgrindingceramicand
stone[1–4].Onlyafewreportshavementionedceramictilemachining[5–8],where
thegrindingmechanismofceramictilesbyscratchingandgrindingwasstudied.It
waspointedoutthatthegrindingmechanismofceramictilesissimilartothatof
otherbrittlematerials.Forvitreousceramictiles,removingtheplasticdeformation
grooves,craters(pores),andcracksareofmajorconcern,whichdependsonthe
micro-structureoftheceramictile,thechoiceofgrindingwheelandprocessing
parameters,etc.Theresidualcracksgeneratedduringsinteringandroughgrinding
processes,aswellasthermalimpactcrackscausedbythetransformationofquartz
crystallinephasesarethemainreasonsoftilebreakageduringprocessing.Surface
roughnessRaandglossinessaredifferentmeasurementsofthesurfacequality.Itis
suggestedthatthesurfaceroughnesscanbeusedtocontrolthesurfacequalityof
roughgrindingandsemi-finishgrindingprocesses,andthesurfaceglossinessto
assessthequalityoffinishingandpolishingprocesses.Thecharacteristicsofthe
grindingwheels,abrasivemeshsizeforthedifferentmachiningsteps,machining
time,pressure,feed,andremovingtracesofgrindingwheelswillaffectthe
processingofceramictiles[9].
Inthispaper,basedonthestudyofgrindingmechanismsofceramictiles,the
manufacturingofgrindingwheelsisdiscussed.Theactionsandoptimizationof
grindingandpolishingwheelsforeachsteparestudiedinparticularformanualpolishing
machines.
GRINDINGANDPOLISHINGWHEELSFORCERAMICTILE
MACHINING
Themachiningofceramictilesisavolume-productionprocessthatuses
significantnumbersofgrindingwheels.Thegrindingandpolishingwheelsfor
ceramictilemachiningaredifferentfromthoseformetalsorstructuralceramics.
Inthispart,someresultsaboutgrindingandpolishingwheelsareintroducedfor
betterunderstandingoftheprocessingofceramictiles.
