HelenKellerwasoneofAmerica'sbestknownwomen.Shewasadmiredforhercourageandachievementsalthoughshecouldn'tseeorhear.Shewasalsoknownthroughouttheworldforherselfsacrificingworktoimprove

theconditionoftheblind,thedeafandthespeechless.WhenshediedonJune1,1968,thenewspaperWashingtonPostwrote:

“Herlifeistrulyoneofthemostremarkablephenomenaofourtimeandherdeathjustshortoftheageof88leavesthewholeworldpoorer.”

HelenKellerwasbornonJune27th,1880,inTuscumbia,Alabama.Forthefirst19monthsofherlife,shewasaprettyandhappybaby,normalineveryway.Thenasuddenillnessdestroyedhersightandherhearing.Becauseshecouldnothearsoundstoimitate(模仿),shecouldnotspeak.HelenusedtosaythatherrealbirthdaywasnotJune27th,1880,butMarch3rd,1887—thedaywhenAnneSullivanenteredherlife.ItwasAnneSullivanwhotaughtHelentospellcertainwordsbyaspecialsystem,Braille,andeventotalk.

AnneSullivancouldnotteachHelenKellertospeakuntilsomeotherimportantthingshadbeenlearned.Thelittlegirlhadtolearntocontrolheractionsandfeelings.Shehadtolearnthatshecouldnotalwaysdowhatshewantedtodo.Shehadalwaysbeenabletogetwhatshewantedbyusingforce.Theteacherhadtochangesuchhabitswithoutbreakingthechild'sspirit.

MissSullivan'sbattlebegan.Sometimes,therewasrealfightingbetweenthewildchildandthestrongyoungteacher.Atlast,however,thebattlewaswonbyMissSullivan,whosucceededinshowingHelenthatshelovedherandwantedtohelpher.Thechildandherteacherbecamefriends.Theycontinuedtobefriendsuntiltheteacher'sdeath,fiftyyearslater.
