主谓一致是指句子的主语和谓语动词在人称和数上要保持一致。

Step3.Explaintherules

一、名词作主语

1.集体名词public,family,class,crowd,population,team,group,audience,majority,committee,enemy等作主语时,如果强调整体,谓语动词用单数形式,如果强调个体,谓语动词用复数形式。

集体名词cattle,people,police等作主语时,谓语动词用复数形式。

如:

Myfamilyisasmallone.

MyfamilywerewatchingTVwhenthenewscamethatwewonthegrandprize.

Thecattleareeatinggrassinthefield.

2.单、复数同形的名词如species,deer,fish,sheep,Chinese,Japanese,means等作主语时,应根据其意义来决定谓语动词的单复数形式。

如:

Thisspeciesofroseisrare.

Thesespeciesarefewinnumbersandmaybewipedoutfromthisplanetifnecessaryactionsarenottakenintime.

3.复数形式的书名、剧名、报名、国名、学科及组织名称等作主语时,谓语动词通常用单数形式。

如:

TheUnitedNationsisoneofthemostimportantinternationalorganizationsinkeepingworldpeace.

4.主语是glasses,shorts,gloves,scissors,trousers等复数名词时,谓语动词要用复数形式。

但如果它们前面有pair/type/kindof时,谓语动词的单复数由pair/type/kind的数决定。

如:

Thetrousersarewornout,soapairofnewtrousersisgoingtobebought.

5.表示重量、距离、金额、时间等的复数名词作主语时,通常被看作整体,谓语动词一般用单数形式。

但是如果强调数目,谓语动词用复数形式。

如:

Fivehundredmilesisalongdistance.

Onehundredcentsmakeadollar.

6.“morethanone/manya+单数名词”作主语时,尽管意义上是复数,但谓语动词多用单数形式。

但是,在“more+复数名词+thanone”作主语时,谓语动词用复数形式。

如:

Manyashiphasbeendamagedinthestorm.

Moremembersthanoneareagainsttheplan.

二、代词作主语

1.代词作主语时,谓语动词的单复数要根据它们所代替的名词的单复数来确定。

如:

Yourshoesareblack,andmine(=myshoes)arebrown.

Mostofhissparetimewasspentinreading.

Eachoftheguestswasgivenapresent.

2.表示数量的不定代词much,little作主语时,谓语动词用单数形式;many,both,few作主语时,谓语动词用复数形式。

如:

ThelittleIhaveisnotworthgiving.

Onlythefewarelikelytoenjoythismusic.

三、由连接词连接的名词或代词作主语

1.由and或both...and...连接两个并列主语时,谓语动词一般用复数形式。

如果and连接的两部分指同一人、同一物、同一事或同一概念时,and后面的名词前没有冠词,谓语动词常用单数形式。

如:

Thesingeranddancerisgoingtogiveusaperformancethisevening.

(Thesingeranddancer指同一个人,双重身份)

Thepeasantandthepoetaregoingtomakespeechesfortheblindinthisspecialschool.

(Thepeasantandthepoet指两个不同的人,一个是农民,另一个是诗人)

2.当主语后面跟有with,alongwith,togetherwith,including,but,except,like,aswellas,besides,ratherthan等引起的短语时,谓语动词的单复数与主语保持一致。

如:

Dr.Green,togetherwithhiswifeandtwosons,hasjustleftandwillreturnatfouro’clock.

3.由or,either...or,neither...nor,notonly...butalso,not...but等连接两个名词或代词作主语时,谓语动词通常与邻近的名词或代词保持一致。

如:

Neitheryounorheknowsanythingaboutit.

四、数词、量词作主语

“分数+of+名词”构成的短语或“alotof/plentyof/a(large)quantityof/therestof+名词”构成的短语作主语时,谓语动词用单数还是复数取决于of后的名词的单复数。

如:

Halfofthestudentshavereadthenovel.

五、从句及其它作主语

1.单个名词性从句作主语时,谓语动词通常用单数形式。

但and连接的两个名词性从句作主语如果表示两个概念,谓语动词用复数。

另外what引导的主语从句作主语时,谓语动词的单复数取决于表语的单复数。

如:

WhetherIhavepassedlastweek’sdrivingtestisstillnotclear.

Wherethestarwillgoandwhathewilldohavenotbeenannouncedtothepublic.

Whatthepeasantworkersneedbadlyarebooksonpracticalskills.

2.单个动词不定式或动词-ing形式作主语时,谓语动词用单数形式,但两个表示不同概念的动词不定式或动词-ing形式并列作主语时,谓语动词用复数形式。
