Gateswasborntoanupper-middleclassfamily.Hisfatherwasanattorney;hismotherwasabanker,whoworkedfortheUnitedWayformanyyears.Heiscreditedforbeingthefatherofthemoderncomputer,andforalmostsingle-handedlystartingthepersonalcomputerrevolution.HestudiedatHarvardUniversity,butdidnotgraduatebecauseofhisdesiretodevelopnewsoftware.
Asa13-year-oldstudentattheLakesideSchool,whichwasanexclusivecollegepreparatoryschool,Gateswasintroducedtocomputerprogramming.Gateswasreportedlyfascinatedbythecomputer’sabilitytoreproducesoftwarecode.In1975,GatesapproachedacompanycalledMicroInstrumentationandTelemetrySystems(MITS).Heconvincedtheownerthathehadwrittenaprogramthatwouldworkwithhisplatform.TheownerofthecompanyboughtintoGatesinnovations,andthetwomenreachedanagreementtodevelopsoftwareforMITS.TheMicrosoftCompanywasborn.
GateswentontodeveloptheWindowsoperatingsystemwiththenpartnerIBMCorporation.Thetwocompanieshaddifferencesthough,andtheirpartnershipendedquickly.GatesleftMicrosoftin2000,butremainsonitsboardofdirectors.HeremainedactivewiththecompanyforseveralyearsbeforesteppingdowninFebruary2014,becomingTechnicalAdvisorforthefirm.
