MarchisNationalWomen’sHistoryMonthintheUnitedStates.Itisatimetorecognize,honorandcelebratetheimportantpartthatwomenplayinshapingAmerica’shistory.Itisalsoatimetocallattentiontothesocial,politicalandeconomicproblemsfacingwomenandgirls.FaithLapidushasourstory.

FAITHLAPIDUS:

Earlierthismonth,theWhiteHouseCouncilonWomenandGirlsreleasedahistoricreportontheconditionofwomeninAmerica.Itisthefirsttimesincenineteensixty-threethatthegovernmenthasreleasedsuchadetailedreportonthesubject.

 

FirstladyMichelleObamawasintroducedbyAissatouHamidouDiallo,13,fromBurkinoFaso,attheWhiteHouseonTuesday.Thereceptionmarkedthe100thanniversaryofInternationalWomen'sDay.

Thereportiscalled“WomeninAmerica:

IndicatorsofSocialandEconomicWell-Being.”

Thereportsayswomenhavemademajorprogressisseveralimportantareas.But,itsays,thereisstillmuchworktobedone.

Womentodayaremoreeducated,havebetterjobsandearnbetterpaythanatanyothertimeinhistory.Therearealsomorewomenthanmengraduatingfromhighschool,enrollingincollegeandattendinggraduateschool.Infact,womenareexpectedtorepresentnearlysixtypercentofallcollegeundergraduateenrollmentbytheyeartwentynineteen.

Alloftheseadvancesrepresentmajorprogressforwomen.However,theWhiteHousereportalsonotedsomeseriousproblems.

Forexample,femaleworkerscontinuetobepaidlessthanmaleworkers.Thereportsaidthatintwothousandninewomenatalleducationallevelsearnedaboutseventypercentofwhatmenearned.Womenwerealsomorelikelythanmentoliveinpoverty.Thiswasespeciallytrueforunmarriedwomenwithchildren.Twenty-eightpercentofthisgrouphadincomelevelsthatwerebelowthepovertyline.

PresidentObamanotedsuchinequitiesinhisPresidentialProclamationforWomen’sHistoryMonth.Mr.Obamasaidcountriesaremorepeacefulandsuccessfulwhentheirfemalecitizensenjoyequalrights,equalvoicesandequalchancesforsuccess.

HealsosaidtheUnitedStatesmustleadbyexampleinprotectingwomen’srightsandsupportingtheirempowerment.Womenarefifty-onepercentofthetotalpopulationinAmerica.

NationalWomen’sHistoryMonthgrewoutofNationalWoman'sDaywhichwasfirstcelebratedintheUnitedStatesinnineteenhundredandnine.TheobservancewascelebratedworldwideasInternationalWomen’sDayinnineteeneleven.Congressexpandeditintoamonth-longcelebrationintheUnitedStatesinnineteeneighty-seven.

Thisyear’sNationalWomen’sHistoryMonthcelebrationiscalled“OurHistoryisOurStrength.”Programsandceremoniesareplannedaroundthecountrytocelebratewomen’ssuccesses.
