12ThingsI’veLearnedFromTravelingAroundtheWorldforThreeYears
OnMarch13,2007,Ihandedoverthekeystomyhouse,putmypossessionsinstorageandheadedouttotravelaroundtheworldwithnothingbutabackpack,mylaptopandacamera.
Threeandahalfyearsand70countrieslater,I’vegottentheequivalentofaPh.DingeneralknowledgeaboutthepeopleandplacesofPlanetEarth.
HerearesomeofthethingsI’velearned:
1)Peoplearegenerallygood.
Manypeopleareafraidoftheworldbeyondtheirdoor,yetthevastmajorityofhumansarenotthieves,murderersorrapists.Theyarepeoplejustlikeyouandmewhoaretryingtogetby,tohelptheirfamiliesandgoaboutlivingtheirlives.Thereisnorace,religionornationalitythatisexemptfromthisrule.Howtheygoaboutlivingtheirlivesmightbedifferent,buttheirgeneralgoalsarethesame.
2)Themedialies.
Ifyouonlylearnedaboutothercountriesfromthenews,you’dthinktheworldwasahorribleplace.Themediawillalwayssensationalizeandsimplifyastory.IwasinEastTimorwhentheassassinationattemptsonPresidentJoséRamos-Horta,andPrimeMinisterXananaGusmãoin2008.ThestoriesinthenewsthenextdaywerefiledfromJakartaorKualaLumpur,notDili.Itwasallsecondhandnews.IwasinBangkokduringthepoliticalproteststhisyear,butyou’dneverhaveanyideatheyweretakingplacesifyouwerenotintheimmediateareawheretheprotestsweretakingplace.Themediamakesusscaredoftherestoftheworld,andweshouldn’tbe.
3)Theworldisboring.
Ifthereisn’tanaturaldisasteroranarmedconflict,mostplaceswillneverevenbementionedinthenews.Whenisthelasttimeyou’veheardLaosorOmanmentionedinanewsstory?
Whatmakesforgoodnewsareexceptionalevents,notordinaryevents.Mostoftheworld,justlikeyourneighborhood,isprettyboring.Itcanbeamazinglyinteresting,buttothelocals,theyjustgoaboutlivingtheirlives.
4)Americansdon’ttravel.
Thisstereotypeistrue.Americansdon’ttraveloverseasasmuchasBrits,Dutch,Germans,CanadiansorScandinavians.Therearesomegoodreasonsforthis(bigcountry,shortvacationtime)andbadones(fearandignorance).Wedon’thaveagapyearcultureliketheyhaveintheUKandwedon’ttendtotakevacationslongerthanaweek.Ican’tthinkofasingleplaceIvisitedwhereImetAmericansinnumbersanywhereclosetoourrelativepopulation.
5)Therestoftheworldisn’tfullofgerms.

7)Travelingdoesn’thavetobeexpensive.
Yes,ifyouinsistonstayinginfive-starhotelsandluxuryresorts,travelcanbeveryexpensive.However,itispossibletovisitmanypartsoftheworldandonlyspend$10-30perday.Inadditiontotravelingcheap,youcanalsoearnmoneyontheroadteachingEnglishorworkingonanorganicfarm.I’vemetmanypeoplewhohavebeenabletotravelonalittlemorethan$1,000/month.ImetonemanfromtheUkrainewhospentamonthinEgypton$300.
8)Culturechanges.

”Evencrossingthestreetbecameanacttotellmeabouthisprideinhiscountry.Peopleinvolvedinmakingforeignpolicyshouldbeveryawareofthis.
10)Mostpeoplehaveadeepdesiretotravelaroundtheworld.
Notshocking,buteverydayImeetpeoplewhoarefascinatedbywhatIdoandhowIlive.Thedesiretotravelisthere,butfearsandexcusesusuallypreventpeoplefromdoingit.Iunderstandthatfewpeoplecandropwhattheyaredoingandtravelaroundtheworldforthreeyears,buttravelingoverseasforevenafewmonthsiswithintherealmofpossibleformanypeopleatsomepointintheirlives.EvenonanislandinthemiddleofthePacific,peoplewhowouldprobablyneverleavetheirhomeislandtalkedtomeofonedaywishingtheycouldseeNewYorkorLondonforthemselves.Ithinkthedesiretoexploreandseenewthingsisfundamentaltothehumanexperience.
