However,inthetranslationfield,ithasbeenwidelyacknowledgedthathumortranslationcanmakeatranslatorfeelasdesperateaspoetrytranslationcan,whichindicatesthatitisverydifficulttotranslatehumor.Butevenso,scholarsandtranslatorsarestillworkingonit,tryingtoapproachhumortranslationfromoneperspectiveoranotherandalotofachievementsonhumortranslationhavebeenmadesofar.
Inpreviousstudies,humorisclassifiedintosituationalhumorandnon-situationalhumorforthepurposeoftranslation.Generallyspeaking,itisconsideredeasiertodealwithsituationalhumorbecausethiskindofhumorisneitherlanguage-boundnorculture-bound.However,problemsarelikelytoariseinthenon-situationalhumorcategoryduetothefactthathumorofthiskindismainlyproducedwiththeaidoflinguistictechniquesandculturalbackgroundinformation.Asfarastranslationofthiscategoryofhumorisconcerned,translationstrategieslikedomesticationandannotationarehighlyrecommended.Ifthetranslatorcannotproduceexactlythesamehumorinthetargettextasthatinthesourcetext,heorsheisrecommendedtoproducesimilarhumorinthetargettext,andifsimilarhumorcannotbeproducedeither,thetranslatorcanresorttoannotationtoensurethatthetargettextreceivercanfeelthehumorafterreadingtheannotation.
Abriefreviewofthepreviousstudiesonhumortranslationshowsthatwhateverapproachisadoptedindiscussingthisissue,focusisalwaysonhowtoproducehumorinthetargettext.Therefore,thequestionofwhetherahumoroussourcetextmustleadtoahumoroustargettextwasraisedhereinthisthesis.Besides,whatifahumoroustargettextcannotfunctionappropriatelyinthetargetculture?
Actually,theanswercanbeprobedintowithintheframeworkoffunctionalisttranslationtheory.Withinthistheoreticalframework,thesourcetextjustoffersinformationandatranslatorchoosescertainpiecesofinformationtoformatargettextwhichcansatisfytherequirementsforthetargetsituationinthetargetculture.Viewedfromthisperspective,ahumoroussourcetextdoesnothavetobetranslatedintoahumoroustargettext,andthetypeoftargettextisdeterminedbythetranslationbrief.
Herethethesiswillclassifyhumortranslationintotwotypes:
