Spiritissolar-powered.ItgotstuckinasandtrapinApril2009,trappeddeepintothesoilandwithitswheelsturningaroundandaroundbutnotabletomoveforwardsorbackwards.Spirithadtoagreethatthereisnothingthatcanbedonetochangethesituation—it’snevergoingtomoveagain.However,evenifitisanotmovingstation,itcanstillstudytheplanet’satmosphereanddeepinterior.

NASAhasbeenconcentratingontryingtopositionitssolarpanelstogetasmuchenergyfromthesunaspossible,ortogettheroverleaninginamannerthatwillallowthemostamountofsunlightfallingonitssolarpanels,inordertokeepitaliveduringthecomingwintermonths.Engineershaveplannedtorockthevehiclebackandforthtoacquireamorefavorableposition.However,nomatterhowmanyeffortshavebeenmade,SpiritstillcouldnotgetoutofthesoftsoilandcouldnotleanitselftowardthesunastheMartianwinterapproached.Withoutenoughenergyreachingitssolarpanelsandwithsolittleenergyinitsbatteries,itwentintohibernation,justlikeapolarbear,andhasnotcommunicatedwithEarthsinceMarch22,2010.

WhateverthefutureholdsforSpirit,itsmissionhasbeenanoutstandingsuccess.WhenitlandedontheRedPlanetinJanuary2004,noonewasreallysurehowlongitwouldcontinueworkinginthecoldanddustyenvironment.Asamatteroffact,threemonthswasitsoriginalgoal.

Aftersomanyfruitlessefforts,NASAscientistsarelosinghopeofeverreconnectingwithSpirit,buttheywillgiveitonemoretry.GroundcontrollersarecontactingSpiritoverarangeoffrequenciesandatdifferenttimesduringthedayincaseitsinternalclockstoppedworkinganditlosttrackoftime.Theyalsoarecommandingtherovertoturnonitsbackupradiotransmitterincasethemainoneisdead.
