ThemarathonhasbeenanOlympiceventsincethemoderngamesstartedin1896.Atfirstthedistancewas40kilometers—thedistancebetweenMarathonandAthens.In1908,however,attheLondonOlympics,itwaschanged.TheKingofEnglandwantedtherunnerstoleavefromhiscastleinWindsorandarriveinanewstadiumincentralLondon.Thedistancewas26miles—about42kilometers.Infact,the1908marathonendeddramatically(戏剧性地).Whentheleader,anItalian,enteredthestadiumheturnedthewrongwayandfellontotheground.Officialspickedhimupandhelpedhimtothefinishingline,justasthesecondrunner,anAmerican,enteredthestadium.TheAmericansprotested(抗议)andintheendtheAmericanrunnerwasdeclared(宣布)thewinner.Sincethen,therehavebeenmanymoreexcitingmarathons.
