withchemicalsandwaste，makingthemunfitforwildlife.Thesecausesofextinctionareknownasindirectdestruction.
Animalsmayalsobecomeextinctthroughdirectdestruction.Thisincludesthehuntingandcatchingofanimals.Manhasalwayshuntedandkilledwildlifebutwhenearlyhumanslivedmoreinharmonywithnature，theykilledanimalsforessentialfoodandclothing.Whenfirearmswereinvented，greatdestructionofspecieswaspossible.Animalshavebeen，andstillare，killedformeat，clothing，medicines，feathers，eggs—andsometimesjustforamusement.Somespeciesarestillcaughtinthewildforthelivepettrade，eventhoughtheirnumbersaredecreasing.
