Theword‘Arachnida’comesfromtheGreekword‘Arachne’whowasthedaughterofIdmonofColophoninLydia,adyerbytrade.Arachneherselfwasaweaver,thebestinalltheknownworld.HoweverinafoolishmomentshechallengedAthena,thedaughterofZeusandgoddessof,amongotherthings,wavingtoaweavingcompetition.Arachnewovesoperfectacloththatshetoreittoshreds.Arachnebecamedepressedafterthisandintheendshehungherself.AthenastirredtoremorseattheknowledgeofwhatherangerhadwroughtturnedtheropeArachnehadusedtohangherselfintoawebandArachneherselfintoaspidersothatthebeautyofherspinningshouldnotbelosttotheworldeveragain.

ThelargestspideristheGoliathspider,thefemaleofwhichgrowstoreachalegspanofteninches.ThelargestspiderinBritainistheCardinalspiderwhichisaclosecousinofTimTegenaria.Femalescanachievealegspanoffourandahalfinches.ItisknownastheCardinalspiderasitwascommoninHamptonCourtwhenCardinalWolseylivedthere.Thesightoftheselongleggedspiderswanderingaroundthepalaceatnightusedtofrightenhim.Sofar32000differentkindsofspiderhavebeendiscoveredfromallovertheworld.Britainhas630differentkindsofspiderofwhich250aretinyMoneyspiders.Thesmallestofwhichhasabodylessthanonemillimeterlong.
