DeanPeterSalovey:
Thanksverymuch.Okay.Thankyouverymuch,ProfessorBloom.ItreallyisapleasuretocomeandlecturetoyoutodayonValentine'sDayonthetopicoflove.Mymainareaofresearchishumanemotion.Andloveisanemotion.It'snotonethatIstudypersonally,atleastnotinthelab,and--butitisfuntotalkabout.Anditisatopicthatlendsitselftomanysocialpsychologicalphenomena.It'salsogreattobeabletocomeinandguestlecture.OneofthethingsIverymuchmisssinceservingasdeanistheopportunitytoteachPsychology110.AndalthoughIlovebeingdean,IdomissteachingIntroductoryPsychology,thefeelingofexposingpeopletoideasthatmaybeyouhadn'theardbefore.
Well,Isuspectsomeoftheideasinthistalkyou'llhavenotheardbeforeandforavarietyofreasons.Acoupleofthethingsyou'llnoticeisthatsomeoftheexperimentsI'lltalkabouttodayarenotthekindsofexperimentsthatcanbedoneanymore.They'renotconsideredethicallyacceptablebuttheyweredoneinthe鈥50sand鈥60sandearly鈥70swhenethicalstandardsweredifferentandsowecanteachthem.Wejustcan'tgiveyouthesameexperiencesthatsomeofthecollegestudentsthatwe'lltalkabouttodayinthesestudieshad.
TheotherthingIwillmentionisthatthereisacertainandrocentricandheterosexualqualitytomuchofthesocialpsychologicalresearchonromanticlove.You'llseethatintheexperiments.Usually,theparticipantsaremenandusuallythetargetsarewomenintheseexperiments.I'mnotendorsingthisastheonlywaytostudylove.ItjusthappenstobethewaytheseexperimentsweredoneandsoImentionthiscautionrightfromthebeginning.We'llhavetothinkabout--Oneofthethingsyoushouldthinkaboutisdoyouthinktheseexperimentsgeneralizedtootherkindsofdyadicrelationships.Andthat'saquestionthatIthinkyoucanaskthroughoutthislecture.
Okay.Solet'sgetstarted.AndtostartthingsoffIthinkwhatweneedtodoisconsideradefinition.I'mgoingtodefinewhatloveisbutthenmostoftheexperimentsI'mgoingtotalkaboutarereallyfocusedmoreonattractionthanlove--whofindseachotherofromanticinterestthatmightthendevelopintoaloverelationship.Butlet'sstartwithadefinitionoflove.AndI'mgoingtopickadefinitionfromaformercolleague,RobertSternberg,whoisnowthedeanatTuftsUniversitybutwashereonourfacultyatYalefornearlythirtyyearsorso.Andhehasatheoryoflovethatarguesthatit'smadeupofthreecomponents:
intimacy,passion,andcommitment,orwhatissometimescalleddecisioncommitment.Andthesearerelativelystraightforward.Hearguedthatyoudon'thaveloveifyoudon'thaveallthreeoftheseelements.
Intimacyisthefeelingofcloseness,ofconnectednesswithsomeone,ofbonding.Operationally,youcouldthinkofintimacyasyousharesecrets,youshareinformationwiththispersonthatyoudon'tsharewithanybodyelse.Okay.That'sreallywhatintimacyis,thebondthatcomesfromsharinginformationthatisn'tsharedwithother--withmanyotherpeople.Secondelementispassion.Passioniswhatyouthinkitis.Passionisthe--wewouldsaythedrivethatleadstoromance.Youcanthinkofitasphysicalattractionorsex.AndSternbergarguesthatthisisarequiredcomponentofaloverelationship.Itisnot,however,arequiredcomponentoftakingashowerinCalhounCollege.[aYaledormitory][laughter]
