InAugust1996,PeterHessler,ayoungAmericanteacherofEnglish,arrivedinthetownofFulingontheYangtzeRiver.Heandacolleagueweretospendtwoyearsthere/teachingEnglishatateachertrainingcollege.Theyweretheonlyforeigners/inthetown.Thefirstsemester/finished/attheendofJanuary/andtheyhadfourweeksoff/fortheSpringFestival.Theycouldgoanywhere/theywished.Theydecidedtotakeaboat/downstream.

Wedecided/tobuytickets/fortheJiangyouboat.Ourcolleaguessaid,“Youshouldn’tgoonthoseships.Theyareverycrowded.Theyaremainlyforgoods/andpeople/tradingalongtheriver.Theydon’tstop/atthetemples/andtherewon’tbeanyotherforeigners.”Thatsoundedfine/tome.Wejusthadtoshowourpassports/andtheyletus/getontheboat.

Weleftthedocks/onabeautifulafternoon.Thesunwasshiningbrightly/aswesaileddownstream/throughahillyregion.Menrodebamboorafts/alongtheriver’sedge/andcoalboatswentpast.Asthesunset/wedockedatFengdu.Wecouldseethesunsettingbehindthewhitepagoda.Itwasbeautiful.

Wesleptthroughthefirstgorge,whichiscalled/theQutangGorge.Thegorgenarrows/to350feet/astheriverrushesthroughthetwo-mile-highmountains.“Oh,well,”myfriendsaid,“atleast/wehavetwomore/left.”

AtWushan/wemadeadetour/uptheDaningRiver/toseesomeofthesmallergorges.Thenextday/wewentthroughthebiggorges/ontheYangtzeRiver.Itwasalovelymorning/aswewentthroughtheWuGorge.WepassedtheXiangRiver,homeofQuYuan,the3rdcenturyBCpoet.Therewassomuchhistory/alongtheYangtzeRiver.Everyrocklookedlikeapersonoranimal,everystream/thatjoinedthegreatriver/carrieditslegends,everyhillwasheavywiththepast.

Aswecameoutofthethirdgorge,theXilingGorge,wesailedintotheconstructionsiteofthedam.Allthepassengerscameondeck.Wetookpictures/andpointedatthesite,but/weweren’tallowed/togetofftheboat.TheChineseflagwasblowing/inthewind.Onadistantmountain/wasasign/in20-footcharacters.“BuildtheThreeGorgesDam,ExploittheYangtzeRiver,”itsaid.
