TheMerchantofVeniceisthemostoutstanding“romantic”comedywrittenbyWilliamShakespeare,thegreatestBritishplaywrightandpoetofRenaissance.ThisplayismainlyabouttheprocessofastorythatShylock,acruelandgreedymoneylender,ispunishedbyAntonio,amerchantofVenice,withthehelpofhisfriends—PortiaandBassanio.Thecentralthemeoftheplayisthetriumphoflove(betweenPortiaandBassanio)andfriendship(betweenAntonioandBassanio)overinsatiablegreedandbrutality(aspresentedbyShylock).AhappyendingisbroughtaboutwhenShylockispunished.HerewecanseethetrueprogressivesignificanceofTheMerchantofVeniceandofitsauthor:
