We knowthatoursmartphonesareexpertly-designeddistractiondevicesthatweakenoureffortstoresist.But,wealsoknowthatresistanceisimportantifwe’reevergoingtofindaworkablemiddlegroundwithourphones–andarecent hasservedupanotherreasontostrengthenourresolve.

Theresultsshowedthatthestudentswhotookabreakwiththeirphonesweretheworstperformersofallthegroups.Theytook19%longertofinishthetasksandtheysolved22%fewerword-problemsthanalltheothergroupscombined.Infact,thecell-phonegroup’sefficiencyandprocessingspeedwasaboutthesameasthegroupthattooknobreak.      

Thereasonofferedbytheresearchersisn’tmerelybecausedigitaldevicesareinherentlyengaging(迷人的),butbecause oursmartphonesareattentiongatesintosomanyotherattention-catchingareas,eachpullingourmentalenergyindifferentdirections.  

Thisresearchstressesthatweignoredtheenergyreductionfromusingoursmartphones,andthatwewereover-confidentaboutwhatourbrainscanhandle. Wealsooverlookedtheemotionalconnectionwe'ddevelopedwithourphones. It'snolongerjustadevice.It'sacompanion.
