Previousresearchfromthisgrouphasdemonstratedtheimportanceofadults'attitudesaboutmathforchildren'smathsuccess.Forexample,arecentstudyfoundthatmath-anxiousparentswhohelptheirchildrenwithmathhomeworkactuallyweakentheirchildren'smathachievement.

Thenewfindingsdemonstratethatstructured,positiveinteractionsaroundmathathomecancutthelinkbetweenparents'uneasinessaboutmathandchildren'slowmathachievement.

"Manypeopleexperiencehighlevelsofanxietywhentheyhavetosolveamathproblem,withamajorityofadultsfeelingatleastsomeworriesaboutmath,"saidBeilock,professorinPsychologyandauthorofChoke,abookaboutstressandperformance."Thesemath-anxiousparentsareprobablylesslikelytotalkaboutmathathome,whichaffectshowcompetenttheirchildrenareinmath.BedtimeMathencouragesadialoguebetweenparentsandkidsaboutmath,andoffersawaytoengageinhigh-qualitymathinteractionsinalow-effort,high-impactway."

Studyparticipantsincluded587first-gradestudentsandtheirparents.FamiliesweregivenanWadinstalledwithaversionoftheBedtimeMathapp,withwhichparentsandtheirchildrenreadstoriesandanswerquestionsinvolvingmath,includingtopicslikecounting,shapesandproblem-solving.Acontrolgroupreceivedareadingappthathadsimilarstorieswithoutthemathcontentandquestionsrelatedtoreadingcomprehensioninstead.Children'smathachievementwasassessedatthebeginningandendoftheschoolyear.Parentscompletedaquestionnaireabouttheirnervousnesswithmath.
