Analysisofglobalprojectmanagement

 

1.Introduction

Inthisessay,threequestionwillbediscussedinthefollowing.Thefirstquestionisabouttheforcesmakingglobalprojectmanagementbeessentialandcrucial,fourforceswillbediscussed,theyarerelatedtoindustrychanges,customers’demand,globalcompetitionandproductcomplexity.ThesecondquestionisaboutthestrategicplanningprocessandtheexampleofAwillbeusedtodemonstratethisprocess.Inthethirdquestion,thestageofstrategicobjectiveswillbeselectedtodiscusstheroleprojectmanagersandteammembersshouldplayinthisstage.Theglobalprojectmanagementreferstotheapplicationofknowledge,skills,toolsandtechniquestoprojectactivitiestomeetprojectrequirements(Kloppenborg,2012,P.4).Thestrategicplanningoftenoccursintherevamportheinfantstageofanorganization.Projectmanagersrefertothemanagerleadtheprojectfromthebeginningtotheend,teammembershererefertocoreteammembers,someonewhomakecrucialdecisionswithprojectmanagersandworkwellwithalltheexperts.Therelationshipbetweenthethreequestionsarelikefollowing,theforcesmakeglobalprojectmanagementincreasinglyimportantandessential.Theprojectmanagementneedtheprojectplanningprocess,withintheprocess,thebehaviorsofprojectmanagersandteammembersareveryimportant.

2.Forcescontributingtoglobalprojectmanagement

Aprojectrefersto“atemporaryendeavorundertakentocreateauniqueproduct,service,orresult”(Kloppenborg,2012,P.4).Aproductshouldbefinishedwithinacertaintimeandplanedinaleveldetail,itshouldhaveadefinedbeginningandending.Thatistosay,projectsareabsolutelydifferentfromoperationswhichcompriseongoingworksandchecklist.Forthesakeofmoreefficiency,projectmanagementisneeded,whichmeans“theapplicationofknowledge,skills,toolsandtechniquestoprojectactivitiestomeetprojectrequirements”(Kloppenborg,2012,P.4).Scope,quality,costandscheduleoughttoberecognizedduringtheprocessofprojectmanagement.Furthermore,withglobalization,projectsamongmultiplecountrieshavebecomingincreasinglycomplexandinternationalcompetitionandcustomers’demandhavebeenimplicatedthanbefore.Therearemanyforcescontributingtotheimportanceandcontinuedimplementationofglobalprojectmanagement.Firstly,quickdevelopmentandchangesinindustriesmakesproductsandservicesbecomemoreflexibleandresponsive.Secondly,rapidintroductionofnewtechnologiesandproductsaredemandedbyincreasingcustomers.Thirdly,internationalcompetitionhasbeendrivingdownprices.Finally,productsandserviceshavebeenincreasinglycomplex.

2.1.Growthandchangesinindustries

Rapidgrowthandchangesinindustriesmakeglobalprojectmanagementessential.Corporatemustbesensitivetoallkindsofchangesthustheyshouldberesponsiveandflexiblewheneverandwherevertheyare.Let’stakeAasanexample.AistheprecursoryonlinebookstorethatproceedinJuly1995byJeffBezos(Velasco,2006)andithasdevelopedaconveniente-readercalledKindle,whichhaseffectivelybroadenitssales.Thesizeofbookindustryisquitelargeandtheseyearshaswitnessedthefull-speeddevelopmentoftheindustry.Withdevelopmentofonlinebusiness,therequirementofbookshavebeenlargerthanbeforeandthee-booksaremorepopularbecausetheyareverycheap.Therefore,AhasbroadenitsonlineplatformandextendeditsbusinessintoChinathroughthemergerandacquisitionwithsomesmallonlineplatform,Consideringtheplannedscope.Andthen,Amazonhasdevelopeditse-readercalledKindle,wontheothere-readersandoccupiedthee-bookindustry,withthesupportofitsstrongplatformandotherpartnerslikeApple.Thecostofdistributionofe-bookisalmostzeroandthequalitymustbeassured.Themostimportantisthatthetwo-stepprojectcanfaceanychangeintheindustrybecauseAmazonhaspredictedthefuturetrendandhasitsfeasibleschedule.

2.2.Demandsfornewproductsandtechnologies

Withthedevelopmentoftechnology,customerscannotbesatisfiedeasilybylow-techproduct.Inordertooccupythemarketshare,corporateoughttoupdateitsproductcontinuously.Forexample,Applehasundateditsiphoneyearlyanddevelopeditsappfrequently.BecauseofitsR&Dproject,theupdatediphonehasattractedmoreandmoreattention,thescopeoftheprojectisverylarge.AnotherpointisthatAppleisfamousforitsperfectqualitybecauseApplecompanyhasacertainstandardfordifferentlevelofqualityandwhichisqualified.Furthermore,thecostofR&Disnotlargeactually,butasasymbolofstatusandwealth,highpricemakehighprofitoftheproject.TheschedulemakesR&Dprojecthasitsorderbecauset
