WhentheUniversityofNevada,RenoholdsitsfirstacademicbootcampAug.16-20,therewon’tbeanysnarlingdrillinstructorsorderingfreshmentoscrubthelatrineswithtoothbrushes,butitwon’tbeeasy,either.
Theywillspendfivedays,from8a.m.to9p.m.,attendingclasses,workinginstudygroupsandtakingexams.
Justasbasictrainingpreparessoldiersforcombat,thegoalofUNR’snewbootcamp,calledBiofit,istohelpfreshmenmajoringincertainscientificfieldsimprovetheirchancesofsurvivingthatfragilefirstsemesterofcollege.
“Studentsofalllevelsofpreparationcomehere,andsomeofthemstrugglethatfirstsemester,”saidJeffThompson,deanofUNR’sCollegeofScience.“Andstudiesshowthatifstudentsstrugglethatfirstsemester,it’sveryhardforthemtoovercome.”
Strugglingstudentsalsoareatriskofdroppingout,andUNRisonamissiontoimproveitsgraduationrate.
Lastyear,slightlymorethanhalfofthefreshmenwhoenteredUNRin2006graduated.
Thegraduationratein2012forUNRstudentswhoearnedadiplomainsixyearswas54percent.That’s2pointsbelowthenationalsix-yeargraduationrateof56percent.
AnotherhopefulindicatorisUNR’sretentionrate:
79percentofthefreshmenwhocameoncampusin2011werestillenrolledwhenthenextfallsemesterbegan.
Attendingthebootcampisvoluntary,andduringitsfirstyear,enrollmentwillbelimitedtofreshmenwhoplantomajorinbiologyorneuroscience.
“It’satestrunwithnorisktothem,”Thompsonsaid.“Theyhavetheopportunitytomakeadjustmentsbeforetheygetapoorgradethatfirstsemesterthat’shardtorecoverfrom.That’sreallywhatwe’retryingtoaddress.”
Thestudentswillliveinthesameresidencehallandhavetopay$200,whichwillcoverfood,roomandprogrammaterials.
UNRjoinsagrowingnumberofcampusesthatofferthistypeofexperiencetohelpfreshmansuccessfullymakethetransitionfromhighschooltocollege.
LouisianaStateUniversityheldthefirstweeklongbootcampin2005fornewfreshmenbiologymajorsatitsCollegeofScience,whereKevinCarmanwasthedeanatthetime.
Carman,whobecameUNR’snewprovostinFebruary,madestartingabootcampatUNRoneofhistoppriorities.
ThompsonsaidLSU’sbootcamphasincreasedstudentgraduationratesfornewfreshmenby50percent.
“Thatisverysignificant,”hesaid.
Hecreditsthatimprovementtothewaybootcampexposesfreshmentothetougheracademicrequirementsofhighereducationbeforetheystarttheirfirstsemester.
“Thepointofbootcampisthatcollegeisverydifferent,butmoststudentsdon’treallyunderstandthat,”Thompsonsaid.
