Thefirstwinterwasdeadly.Arrivinglaterthanplanned,theEnglishwereforcedtobuildhousesduringtheicywinterweather.Soonsicknessspreadamongthem,andhalfofthemdied.Fortunately,theillnessesendedbyspringtime.Livingconditionsimprovedassomeofthehouseswerefinishedandtheweatherwarmed.Gardensandthefirstcropswereplanted.

GovernorWilliamBradfordlaterwrote.“Theybegantogatherinthesmallharvesttheyhad,andtofituptheirhousesagainstwinter.”
