Theliterarypendulumhasaswungthesedays.DifferentcriticshavedifferentopinionstowardsRobertLouisStevenson’sworks.Thoughtoday,Stevensonisoneofthemosttranslatedauthorsintheworld,hisworkshavesustainedawidevarietyofnegativecriticismthroughouthislife.itwaslikeacompletereversalofpolarity---fromhighlypositivetoslightlylesspositivetoclearlynegative;afterbeinghighlypraisedasagreatwriter,hebecameanexampleofanauthorwithcorruptethicsandlackofmoral.Manyliterarycriticspassedhisworksoffaschildren’sstoriesorhorrorstories,andthoughttohavelittlesocialvalueinaneducationalsetting.Stevenson’sworkswereoftenexcludedfromliteraturecurriculumbecauseofitscontroversialnature.Thesedebatesremain,andmanycriticsstillassertthatdespitehisskill,hisliteraryworksstilllackmoralvalue.

OneofthemainreasonswhyStevenson’sliteraryworksattractedsomuchcriticismwasduetothegenreofhiswriting.Stevensonmainlywroteadventurestories,whichwaspartofapopularandentertainingwritingfadatthetime.Manyofusbelieveadventurestoriesareexciting,offersengagingcharacters,action,andmysterybutultimatelycan’tteachmoralprinciples.Theplotpointsareone-dimensionalandrarelyofferadeepermoralmeaning,insteadfocusingonexcitingandshockingplottwistsandthrillingevents.Hisworkswereevencriticizedbyfellowauthors.ThoughStevenson’sworkshavedeeplyinfluencedOscarWilde,WildeoftenjokedthatStevensonwouldhavewrittenbetterworksifhewasn’tborninScotland.OtherauthorscametoStevenson’sdefence,includingGalsworthywhoclaimedthatStevensonisagreaterwriterthanThomasHardy.
