OneofthemainreasonswhyStevenson’sliteraryworksattractedsomuchcriticismwasduetothegenreofhiswriting.Stevensonmainlywroteadventurestories,whichwaspartofapopularandentertainingwritingfadatthetime.Manyofusbelieveadventurestoriesareexciting,offersengagingcharacters,action,andmysterybutultimatelycan’tteachmoralprinciples.Theplotpointsareone-dimensionalandrarelyofferadeepermoralmeaning,insteadfocusingonexcitingandshockingplottwistsandthrillingevents.Hisworkswereevencriticizedbyfellowauthors.ThoughStevenson’sworkshavedeeplyinfluencedOscarWilde,WildeoftenjokedthatStevensonwouldhavewrittenbetterworksifhewasn’tborninScotland.OtherauthorscametoStevenson’sdefence,includingGalsworthywhoclaimedthatStevensonisagreaterwriterthanThomasHardy.
