ToPresidentClinton,toPresidentBillClinton,whomadelastnightthecaseforchangeasonlyhecanmakeittoTedKennedy,whoembodiesthespiritofserviceandtothenextvicepresidentoftheUnitedStates,JoeBiden,Ithankyou.

Iamgratefultofinishthisjourneywithoneofthefineststatesmenofourtime,amanateasewitheveryonefromworldleaderstotheconductorsontheAmtraktrainhestilltakeshomeeverynight.

Totheloveofmylife,ournextfirstlady,MichelleObamaandtoMaliaandSasha,Iloveyousomuch,andIamsoproudofyou.

Fouryearsago,Istoodbeforeyouandtoldyoumystory,ofthebriefunionbetweenayoungmanfromKenyaandayoungwomanfromKansaswhoweren'twell-offorwell-known,butsharedabeliefthatinAmericatheirsoncouldachievewhateverheputhismindto.

Itisthatpromisethat'salwayssetthiscountryapart,thatthroughhardworkandsacrificeeachofuscanpursueourindividualdreams,butstillcometogetherasoneAmericanfamily,toensurethatthenextgenerationcanpursuetheirdreams,aswell.That'swhyIstandheretonight.Becausefor232years,ateachmomentwhenthatpromisewasinjeopardy,ordinarymenandwomen--studentsandsoldiers,farmersandteachers,nursesandjanitors--foundthecouragetokeepitalive.

Wemeetatoneofthosedefiningmoments,amomentwhenournationisatwar,oureconomyisinturmoil,andtheAmericanpromisehasbeenthreatenedoncemore.

Tonight,moreAmericansareoutofworkandmoreareworkingharderforless.Moreofyouhavelostyourhomesandevenmorearewatchingyourhomevaluesplummet.Moreofyouhavecarsyoucan'taffordtodrive,creditcards,billsyoucan'taffordtopay,andtuitionthat'sbeyondyourreach.

Thesechallengesarenotallofgovernment'smaking.ButthefailuretorespondisadirectresultofabrokenpoliticsinWashingtonandthefailedpoliciesofGeorgeW.Bush.

America,wearebetterthantheselasteightyears.Weareabettercountrythanthis.

ThiscountryismoredecentthanonewhereawomaninOhio,onthebrinkofretirement,findsherselfoneillnessawayfromdisasterafteralifetimeofhardwork.

We'reabettercountrythanonewhereamaninIndianahastopackuptheequipmentthathe'sworkedonfor20yearsandwatchasit'sshippedofftoChina,andthenchokesupasheexplainshowhefeltlikeafailurewhenhewenthometotellhisfamilythenews.

WearemorecompassionatethanagovernmentthatletsveteranssleeponourstreetsandfamiliesslideintopovertythatsitsthatsitsonitshandswhileamajorAmericancitydrownsbeforeoureyes.

Andwearehere--weareherebecausewelovethiscountrytoomuchtoletthenextfouryearslookjustlikethelasteight.

Now,now,letme--lettherebenodoubt.TheRepublicannominee,JohnMcCain,hasworntheuniformofourcountrywithbraveryanddistinction,andforthatweowehimourgratitudeandourrespect.

Andnextweek,we'llalsohearaboutthoseoccasionswhenhe'sbrokenwithhispartyasevidencethathecandeliverthechangethatweneed.

Buttherecord'sclear:

JohnMcCainhasvotedwithGeorgeBush90percentofthetime.

SenatorMcCainlikestotalkaboutjudgment,but,really,whatdoesitsayaboutyourjudgmentwhenyouthinkGeorgeBushhasbeenrightmorethan90percentofthetime?

Idon'tknowaboutyou,butIamnotreadytotakea10percentchanceonchange.

Thetruthis,onissueafterissuethatwouldmakeadifferenceinyourlives--onhealthcare,andeducation,andtheeconomy--SenatorMcCainhasbeenanythingbutindependent.

Hesaidthatoureconomyhasmadegreatprogressunderthispresident.Hesaidthatthefundamentalsoftheeconomyarestrong.

Andwhenoneofhischiefadvisers,themanwhowrotehiseconomicplan,wastalkingabouttheanxietiesthatAmericansarefeeling,hesaidthatwewerejustsufferingfromamentalrecessionandthatwe'vebecome,andIquote,"anationofwhiners."

Anationofwhiners?

TellthattotheproudautoworkersataMichiganplantwho,aftertheyfoundoutitwasclosing,keptshowingupeverydayandworkingashardasever,becausetheyknewtherewerepeoplewhocountedonthebrakesthattheymade.

Tellthattothemilitaryfamilieswhoshouldertheirburdenssilentlyastheywatchtheirlovedonesleavefortheirthird,orfourth,orfifthtourofduty.

Thesearenotwhiners.Theyworkhard,andtheygiveback,andtheykeepgoingwithoutcomplaint.ThesearetheAmericansIknow.

Now,Idon'tbelievethatSenatorMcCaindoesn'tcarewhat'sgoingoninthelivesofAmericans;Ijustthinkhedoesn'tknow.

Whyelsewouldhedefinemiddle-classassomeonemakingunder$5millionayear?

Howelsecouldheproposehundredsofbillionsintaxbreaksforbigcorporationsandoilcompanies,butnotonepennyoftaxrelieftomorethan100millionAmericans?

OBAMA:

Howelsecouldheofferahealthcareplanthatwouldactuallytaxpeople'sbenefits,oraneducationplanthatwoulddonothingtohelpfamiliespayforcollege,oraplanthatwouldprivatizeSocialSecurityandgambleyourretirement?

It'snotbecauseJohnMcCaindoesn'tcare;it'sbecauseJohnMcCaindoesn'tgetit.

Forovertwodecades--forovertwodecades,he'ssubscribedtothatold,discreditedRepublicanphilosophy:

Givemoreandmoretothosewiththemostandhopethatprosperitytricklesdowntoeveryoneelse.

InWashington,theycallthisthe"OwnershipSociety,"butwhatitreallymeansisthatyou'reonyourown.Outofwork?

Toughluck,you'reonyourown.Nohealthcare?

Themarketwillfixit.You'reonyourown.Bornintopoverty?

Pullyourselfupbyyourownbootstraps,evenifyoudon'thaveboots.Youareonyourown.

Well,it'stimeforthemtoowntheirfailure.It'stimeforustochangeAmerica.Andthat'swhyI'mrunningforpresidentoftheUnitedStates.

Yousee,yousee,weDemocratshaveaverydifferentmeasureofwhatconstitutesprogressinthiscountry.

Wemeasureprogressbyhowmanypeoplecanfindajobthatpaysthemortgage,whetheryoucanputalittleextramoneyawayattheendofeachmonthsoyoucansomedaywatchyourchildreceivehercollegediploma.

Wemeasureprogressinthe23millionnewjobsthatwerecreatedwhenBillClintonwaspresiden...whentheaverageAmericanfamilysawitsincomegoup$7,500insteadofgodown$2,000,likeithasunderGeorgeBush.

WemeasurethestrengthofoureconomynotbythenumberofbillionaireswehaveortheprofitsoftheFortune500,butbywhethersomeonewithagoodideacantakeariskandstartanewbusiness,orwhetherthewaitresswholivesontipscantakeadayoffandlookafterasickkidwithoutlosingherjob,aneconomythathonorsthedignityofwork.

Thefundamentalsweusetomeasureeconomicstrengtharewhetherwearelivinguptothatfundamentalpromisethathasmadethiscountrygreat,apromisethatistheonlyreasonIamstandingheretonight.

Because,inthefacesofthoseyoungveteranswhocomebackfromIraqandAfghanistan,Iseemygrandfather,whosignedupafterPearlHarbor,marchedinPatton'sarmy,andwasrewardedbyagratefulnationwiththechancetogotocollegeontheG.I.Bill.

Inthefaceofthatyoungstudent,whosleepsjustthreehoursbeforeworkingthenightshift,Ithinkaboutmymom,whoraisedmysisterandmeonherownwhilesheworkedandearnedherdegree,whoonceturnedtofoodstamps,butwasstillabletosendustothebestschoolsinthecountrywiththehelpofstudentloansandscholarships.

WhenI--whenIlistentoanotherworkertellmethathisfactoryhasshutdown,IrememberallthosemenandwomenontheSouthSideofChicagowhoIstoodbyandfoughtfortwodecadesagoafterthelocalsteelplantclosed.

AndwhenIhearawomantalkaboutthedifficultiesofstartingherownbusinessormakingherwayintheworld,Ithinkaboutmygrandmother,whoworkedherwayupfromthesecretarialpooltomiddlemanagement,despiteyearsofbeingpassedoverforpromotionsbecauseshewasawoman.

She'stheonewhotaughtmeabouthardwork.She'stheonewhoputoffbuyinganewcaroranewdressforherselfsothatIcouldhaveabetterlife.Shepouredeverythingshehadintome.Andalthoughshecannolongertravel,Iknowthatshe'swatchingtonightandthattonightishernight,aswell.

Now,Idon'tknowwhatkindoflivesJohnMcCainthinksthatcelebritieslead,butthishasbeenmine.

Thesearemyheroes;theirsarethestoriesthatshapedmylife.AnditisonbehalfofthemthatIintendtowinthiselectionandkeepourpromisealiveaspresidentoftheUnitedStates.
