Thespeakingsituationalsohelpsmakelanguageclearer.Forexample,theword“bank”hastwopossiblemeanings.Itcanmean“aplacewherepeoplekeepmoney”,butitcanalsomean“thesideofariver”.Sothesentence“Iwenttothebank”isnotclear.ItcouldmeanIwenttothesideoftheriveroritcouldmeanIwenttotheplacewheremymoneyiskept.However,ifthespeakeristalkingaboutfishingorgoingtothemountains,othersprobablyknowthat“bank”means“thesideofariver”.
