OneofthegreateststoriesofragstorichessuccessisthatofAndrewCarnegie,whostartedlifeinPovertybutbecametherichestmanintheworld.

CarnegiewasborninScotlandin1837,thesonofaweaver.In1848,the.familymovedtotheUnitedStatesandat13Carnegiebeganworkinacottonmill,earning$1.5perweek.Aboutthreeyearslater,hefoundabetterjobasatelegraphmessengerboy.Atwork,hissuperiorswereimpressedbyhisabilitiesandwillingnesstoworkhard.In1853,hegainedanofficejobatthePennsylvaniaRailroadCompany.Thiswashisfirstbigbreak.Hecontinuedtoimpressandroserapidlythroughthecompany,gainingmoreandmoreresponsibility.Atthesametime,Carnegielovedreadingverymuchandmadeuseofeveryopportunitytovisitthelibrary.Herendwidelyonallsubjects,particularlyliterature.

Carnegienowbegantosavealittlemoneyand,withthehelpofhisemployer,begantomakesomesuccessfulinvestments(投资).Heinvestedintheironindustryandeventuallysetupinbusinesshimself,owningseveralironandsteelplants.Thiswaswherehemadehisfortune.Bythe1890s,theCarnegieSteelCompanywasthebiggestandmostsuccessfulbusinessintheworld.

Carnegiehadalwaysbelievedthatthepursuit(追求)ofwealthwasneveranendinitself.Inhisview,successful,wealthypeopleshouldgiveawaytheirwealthforthebenefitofeveryoneinsociety.Truetohisword,in1901,attheageof66,heretiredfrombusinessanddevotedtherestofhislifetocharitywork.

Carnegie'slackofformaleducationandhispoorfamilybackgroundclearlydidn'tinfluencehissuccess.Hisrapidrisefrompovertytowealthwasduetohiswillingnesstoworkhard,hisintelligenceandgoodbusinesssense,andhistalentformakingthingshappen.Hediedin1919attheageof83.
