Bloodsamplesweretakeneachweektocomparewhichgenesinbloodcellswerebeingusedduringthelongandshortnights.Theresultswererathersurprising.Severalhundredgeneschangedintheamounttheywerebeingused,includingsomethatarelinkedtoheartdisease,cancer,andType2diabetes.Genestodowithcellrepairandreplacementwereusedmuchless.

Sleeprestriction(sixandahalftosevenhoursanight)changed380genes.Ofthese,220genesweredownregulated(theirpowerwasincreased).Thoseaffectedincludedbody-clockgeneswhicharelinkedtodiabetes(糖尿病).Oneofthemostdowngradedgenesisthatwhichhasaroleincontrollinginsulin(胰岛素)andislinkedtodiabetesandinsomnia(失眠).Themostupgradedgeneislinkedtoheartdisease.

Sochangingsleepbytinyamountscanupgradeordowngradegenesthatcaninfluenceourhealthandthediseaseswesufferfromwhenwesleeptoolittle.
