Womenarebetterthanmenwhenitcomestowashingtheirhandsinpublictoilets.Thisisaccordingtoanewstudy*fromtheAmericanSocietyforMicrobiology(ASM).ItmonitoredthewashinghabitsofthousandsofpeopleinrestroomsinfourmajorU.S.cities.Itfound90percentofwomenwashedtheirhands,comparedwith75percentofmen.Aseparatetelephonesurveyrevealedthatpeopleperhapslieabouthowhygienictheyare:
97percentofwomenand96percentofmensaidtheyalwayswashtheirhandsafterusingapublicrestroom.
Dr.JudyDalyoftheASMadvised:
“Oneofthemosteffectivetoolsinpreventingthespreadofinfectionisatourfingertips.Thesinglemostimportantthingwecandotokeepfromgettingsickandspreadingillnesstoothersistocleanourhands.”Sheexplainedthatcoldandfluvirusesarespreadbyhandsmoreoftenthanthroughtheairfromsneezing.However,thestudyfoundonly42percentwashafterpettingadogorcat,32percentaftercoughingorsneezingand21percentafterhandlingmoney.Banknotesandcoinsarefullofillness-causingbacteria.
