Thisisanextraordinaryinterestingquestion，sincetheyareamixtureofmanydifferentraces，andalltheseracesinvadedBritainatvarioustimesfromEurope.NobodyknowsverymuchaboutBritainbeforetheRomanscameduringthefirstcenturyB．C.，buttherehadbeenatleastthreeinvasionsbeforethat.ThefirstofthesewasbyadarkhairedMediterraneanracecalledtheIberians.TheothertwowerebyCeltictribes：

firsttheGaels，whosedescendantsarethemodernScotsandIrish，someofwhomstillspeaktheGaeliclanguage；andsecondtheBritons，whogavetheirnametothewholeislandofBritain.ThesewerethepeoplewhomtheRomansconquered.TheRomansgavetheBritonsagooddealoftheircivilisation，buttheyneversettledinBritaininverylargenumbers，sotheBritishracesurviveduntiltheoverthrowoftheRomanEmpirebythe“barbarians”，i.e.thenumerousGermanictribeswhichoverranthewholeofWesternEurope.
