Thisisanextraordinaryinterestingquestion,sincetheyareamixtureofmanydifferentraces,andalltheseracesinvadedBritainatvarioustimesfromEurope.NobodyknowsverymuchaboutBritainbeforetheRomanscameduringthefirstcenturyB.C.,buttherehadbeenatleastthreeinvasionsbeforethat.ThefirstofthesewasbyadarkhairedMediterraneanracecalledtheIberians.TheothertwowerebyCeltictribes:

firsttheGaels,whosedescendantsarethemodernScotsandIrish,someofwhomstillspeaktheGaeliclanguage;andsecondtheBritons,whogavetheirnametothewholeislandofBritain.ThesewerethepeoplewhomtheRomansconquered.TheRomansgavetheBritonsagooddealoftheircivilisation,buttheyneversettledinBritaininverylargenumbers,sotheBritishracesurviveduntiltheoverthrowoftheRomanEmpirebythe“barbarians”,i.e.thenumerousGermanictribeswhichoverranthewholeofWesternEurope.
