Whenyouhear,orevenusethesephrases,youprobablydon’tstoptothinkaboutwhyweusethem.Well,it’sbecauseofoursense.Withoutusevenknowing,oursenseorgans(nose,eyes,ears,tongue,andskin)aretakingininformationandsendingittothebrainforprocessing.Ifwedidn’thavethem,wewouldnotbeabletosmell,see,hear,taste,ortouchanything!
Sensesarethephysicalmeansbywhichalllivingthingssee,hear,smell,taste,andtouch.Eachsensecollectsinformationabouttheworldanddetectschangeswithinthebody.Bothpeopleandanimalsgetalloftheirknowledgefromtheirsenses,andthatiswhysensesaresoimportant.
Allsensesdependontheworkingnervesystem.Oursenseorgansstarttoworkwhensomethingstimulatesspecialnervecells,calledreceptors,inasenseorgan.Oncestimulated,thereceptorssendnerveimpulsesalongsensorynervestothebrain.Yourbrainthentellsyouwhattodo.Forexample,yoursoundreceptorsareoftenattackedbybillionsofsoundwaves.Whenthesesignalsreachthepartofthebraincalledthecerebralcortex,webecomeconsciousofthesounds.
