Workinginthefieldofbiotechnology(生物科技),allthreelaureateshavespentmanyyearsdevelopingstrainsofplantsimprovedtominimizecroplossduetopests,diseasesandotherproblems.

“Todaynearly870millionpeople,one-eighthoftheworld’spopulation,sufferfromchronic(长期的)hunger,”saidSecretaryofStateJohnKerry,whodeliveredthekeynotespeechaftertheannouncement.

“HungerisatrapthatpreventspeoplefromrealizingtheirGod-givenpotential.”Yetbytheyear2050,theglobalpopulationwillhavegrowntomorethan9billionpeople,meaningthatfoodproductionwillneedtoincreasebyatleast60percentoverourcurrentagriculturalproduction,saidKerry.
