TotheGreeksandRomans,the“dogdays”occurredaroundthedaywhenSiriusappearedtorisejustbeforethesun,inlateJuly.Theyreferredtothesedaysasthehottesttimeoftheyear.IfyougobackevenasfarasabookTheIliad,itdescribesthestarasbeingassociatedwithwaranddisaster.AllthroughoutGreekandRomanliterature,youfoundthesethings.Thephrase“dogdays”wastranslatedfromLatintoEnglishabout500yearsago.Sincethen,ithastakenonnewmeanings.

Tyrannosaurswereatypeofmeat-eatingdinosaurthatincludedthestrongTyrannosaurusrexandAlbertosaurus.“Groupsoftyrannosaursmayhavestucktogetherasagrouptoincreasetheirchancesofbringingdownanimalsandindividuallysurviving,”studyco-authorRichardMcCreasays.HeworksforCanada’sPeaceRegionPalaeontologyResearchCentre.It’sbelievedthattyrannosaursweresolitarycreatures.Thenewlydiscoveredtrackwayscouldchangethewayscientistslookatthesefrighteningbeasts.

Trackwayscanuncoveralotaboutthesocialbehaviorofaspecies.Unfortunately,veryfewtyrannosaurfootprintshaveeverbeenfound,anduntilrecently,theonlyonesknownweresingleprintsdiscoveredinMongolia,thewesternU.S.,andwesternCanada.ButinOctober2011,ahuntingguidenamedAaronFredlundfoundtwotyrannosaurtrackmarksnearTumblerRidge,anareainthefoothillsoftheCanadianRockies.Overthenextyear,McCreaandhisteamsearchedthesiteandfoundtheremainingtrackways.

Thefootprintsareataboutthesamedepthswhichsuggeststhetyrannosaursmovedthroughtheareaatthesametime.Impressionsofthedinosaurs’roughskinareevenvisibleintheprints.Theprintsarealsoinnear-perfectcondition.That1sbecausethegroundhadahighclay(黏土)contentwhenthedinosaurswalkedthroughthearea.Thelandwaslatercoveredbyathicklayerofvolcanicash,whichkeptthemarksintact(完整的).“Thisisthemostidealsituationyoucouldaskfor,”McCreasays.

Researchersaren’tsureoftheexactspeciesoftyrannosaurthatlefttheprints.Butthehistoricfindingsshowagreatdealabouthowthebeastsmovedandbehaved.“Wehaveextremelyconvincingevidencethattyrannosaurstraveledingroups,”saysMcCrea.“Thisisprobablythemostimportantevi
