生态翻译学视角下的网络流行语

英译研究

摘要

在互联网快速发展的时代,网络流行语不断产生,形成了一种特殊的语言。

网络流行语不仅内容丰富,而且风格幽默诙谐,很容易为大众所接受认可。

生态翻译着眼于翻译生态系统的整体性,具体阐述和例证了翻译适应选择论对翻译本体的解释功能:

三维转换、译者为中心、译者的适应和选择。

本文以生态翻译学为视角,探讨网络流行语的特殊环境和特征,从生态翻译学的三个维度,即语言维、文化维和交际维,研究网络流行语英译的适应性、实用性、交际性。

并通过分析网络流行语的具体例子,提出几种可行的翻译方法,例如:

直译、意译、音译和创新译法。

这一研究一方面有利于推动生态翻译学和网络流行语英译研究的发展,另一方面有利于网络流行语的传播。

OntheC-ETranslationofInternetCatchwordsfromthePerspectiveofEco-translatology

Abstract

InaneraofrapiddevelopmentofInternet,Internetcatchwordsconstantlyemerge,formingaspeciallanguage.Internetcatchwordsarenotonlyrichincontents,butarealsohumorousinstyles,whichareeasilyacceptedbythepublic.Eco-translatologyfocusesontheintegrityoftranslationalecologicalsystem.Itillustratesandexemplifiestheinterpretivefunctionoftranslationasadaptationandselectiontotheontologicalstudiesoftranslation:

thethree-dimensionaltransformation,translator-centeredness,translator’sadaptationandselection.

Fromtheviewofeco-translatology,thisthesisdiscussesthespecialenvironmentsandcharacteristicsofInternetcatchwordsandstudiestheadaptability,practicabilityandcommunicativenessofC-EtranslationofInternetcatchwordsfromthreedimensionsofeco-translatology,namely,linguisticdimension,culturaldimensionandcommunicativedimension.Inaddition,thethesisputsforwardseveralfeasibletranslationmethods,suchasliteraltranslation,freetranslation,transliterationandinnovativetranslationbyanalyzingthespecificexamplesofInternetcatchwords.Ontheonehand,thisstudyisconducivetopromotingthedevelopmentofeco-translatologyandC-EtranslationofInternetcatchwords;ontheotherhand,itishelpfultothespreadofInternetcatchwords.

1.Introduction

Asthecontinuousupdateofnetworktechnology,theInternetplaysaconsiderablepartinthelifeofpeople.UsingInternetcatchwordsthathavestrongvitality,creativityandinnovationtocommunicatehasbecomeanormalstate.AndthetranslationofInternetcatchwordsisanimportantpartofC-Etranslation,whichcanmakeforeignersunderstandChinesecultureandenhancecultureexchange.

Eco-translatologyprovidesanewresearchperspectivefortranslation.In2001,ProfessorHuGengshenputforwardeco-translatology,andhecomprehensivelyandsystematicallyelaborateditoninternationalstagesin2006.GuidedbyDarwin'sideaof"survivalofthefittest",eco-translatologyhasgraduallydevelopedintothetheoryoftranslationasadaptationandselection.Inmoderntimes,thestudyofC-EtranslationofInternetcatchwordsismostlybasedonHuGengshen'seco-translatologytheory.ThescholarsanalyzetheexamplesofC-EtranslationofInternetcatchwordsbyfollowingthemodeofadaptationandselection,andusethemethodofthree-dimensionaltransformationtomakein-depthcomparison,soastobetterpromoteC-EtranslationofInternetcatchwords.

Basedonthetheoryandmethodofeco-translatology,thestudyofInternetcatchwordsembodiesthescientificthoughtandtheobjectivityanduniversalityofeco-translatologyinpractice.Inaddition,thepurposeofstudyingC-EtranslationofInternetcatchwordsisnotonlytopursuethebesttranslation,butalsotoadapttoandanalyzetheeco-environmentofInternetcatchwordsfromthreedimensions,soastofacilitatecommunicationbetweenChineseandWesterncultures.

2.LiteratureReview

2.1ResearchofInternetCatchwordsAbroad

WesternscholarsstudiedInternetlanguagesearlierthanChina.DavidCrystal(2001)wroteabookwhichisthefirstforeignbookaboutnetworklanguage,thatisLanguageandtheInternet,thebookhasbeentranslatedintomultiplelanguages,preparingthegroundforInternetlanguageresearchintheentiretechnologicalrevolution.

ForeignresearchesonInternetcatchwordsmainlyfocusonthefollowingaspects:

thecommunicationmodeofInternetcatchwords,thecommunicationfunctionofInternetcatchwords,thereasonsforformationofInternetCatchwords,Internetcatchwordsandrelevancetheory.AttridgeDaniel(2004)studiedtheapplicationofRelevanceTheoryinthegenerationanddisseminationofInternetcatchwords.DennettClyde(2005)saidthatthefuturedevelopmenttrendofInternetcatchwordsischaracterizedbyconformitywiththetimes,existenceandinnovation,integrationandmerger.BolterJacob(2007)analyzedthereasonsforformationofInternetcatchwordsfromtheviewofsociology.LynchAbel(2005)discussedthesocialpsychologyoftheemergenceanddevelopmentofInternetcatchwords.RomaineSaber(2008),anAmericanscholar,saysthattheInternetisthemaincommunicationplatformforInternetcatchwords.Withthepromotionofothercommunicationchannels,theInternetcatchwordsspreadanddisseminateliketheseedsofthedandelion.

2.2ResearchofInternetCatchwordsatHome

InthewakeofdevelopmentofInternettechnology,thedomesticresearchesonInternetcatchwordshavetakenoff.AttheinitialstageoftheresearchonInternetcatchwordsinChina,alotofdomesticscholarschieflyemphasizedthecollectionandarrangementofInternetcatchwordsandtheexplanationoftheconceptofInternetcatchwords.Atpresent,therearemainlyfourspecializeddictionariesofInternetlanguagesinChina.ThepublicationsofthesedictionariesdemonstratethewideinfluencesandpowerfulvitalityofInternetlanguages,andmarkheriseofthenewresearchfieldofInternetlanguages.

AsscholarsdeepentheirresearchonInternetcatchwords,theyarenolongersatisfiedwithsimplycollectingandarrangingInternetcatchwordsandbegintoanalyzethemfromtheperspectiveofprofessionalsubjects.YangLin(2006)analyzedtheculturalsignificanceofInternetcatchwordsandthecharacteristicsofmassculturereflectedbyInternetcatchwordsfromtheperspectiveofculturology.ManyscholarssuchasChangNanandChenJianweiresearchedtheInternetcatchwordsfromtheviewoflinguistics.Astimegoesby,thescholarstrytostudyInternetcatchwordsfromperspectivesofthejournalismandcommunication,sociology,psychology,culturologyandotherprofessionaldisciplines.YuQiuping(2010)believedthatInternetcatchwordshavepropagandavalueinadvertisingmarketing.ZuMingyuan(2010)saidthatthefourfactorsthatmotivatenetizenstocreateInternetcatchwordsarelettingofftheresentfulemotions,openInternetdiscourseplatform,limitedexpressionchannelsofnetizensandawakeningofaudienceawareness.

3.AGeneralResearchonInternetCatchwords

3.1 DefinitionofInternetCatchwords

“InternetcatchwordisthemediathatemergesinallInternetenvironmentsandcanreflectthedistinctivefeaturesoftheInternet.Ithaselectronic,globalandinteractivecharacteristics.”(于根元,2003:

16).Internetcatchwordshavedistinctivefeaturesofthetimes,andeacherahasInternetcatchwordsthatreflecttheuniquecontemporaryculture,lifestyleandthinkingmode.Intermsoftheformationofwords,Internetcatchwordscontainthreebasicelements:

network,popularityandlanguage.TheInternetcatchwordisthelanguagevariantsinthenetworkenvironmentandaspecialcompositionofthepopularelementsinthenetworklanguage.Internetcatchwordsmusthaveboththeessentialfeaturesofcatchwordsandnetworklanguages.Therefore,thedefinitionofInternetcatchwordsshouldbebasedonthesurveyandanalysisoftheconceptsandcharacteristicsofcatchwordsandnetworklanguages.

3.2 FeaturesofInternetCatchwords

3.2.1TimelinessofInternetCatchwords

Internetcatchwordsareclosetothecurrenteventsandreflectpeople’scurrentlivingconditionsandpsychologicalfactors,theyhavethecharacteristicsofrapidrenewal,shortlifespan,andlimitedtransmissionrange.WiththeadventofnewInternetcatchwords,theInternetcatchwordsthatwerewidelyspreadyesterdayarelikelytobeforgottenbypeopletodayandthentheywilldisappearovertime.

3.2.2Life-natureofInternetCatchwords

ThebirthofInternetcatchwordwasoriginallyusedtosimplifychatprograms.Later,withtheincreasingrichnessanddevelopmentofpeople'snetworklife,netizensspontaneouslycreatedphrases,vocabularyandshortsentencesthatexpressspecialemotionsandaresuitableforspecialoccasions.Networktermsaremainlyusedinnetworkcommunicationanddailyoralcommunication,theyareusuallysimpleinform,humorousincontentandeasytounderstand.Becausenetizensspontaneouslycreatethem,thehotwordsontheInternetcancomprehensivelyreflecttheissuespeoplearemostconcernedaboutintheirdailylife.Somenetizensuseitininformaloccasionsfarandwide,closingtherelationshipsbetweenpeople.

3.2.3PluralisticContentofInternetCatchwords

Todayisanopensocietywithmultiplecultures.Asaformofsocialculture,Internetcatchwordsalsoembodythecharacteristicsofdiversity.Theintegrationoftraditionalculture,modernculture,foreigncultureandnationalculturecangreatlyenrichthesourceandcontentofInternetcatchwords,thus,promotingthespreadandintegrationofvariouscultures.Nowadays,afewInternetcatchwordsareformedbytheblendingofChineseandEnglish,forexample,“打call”(toputone’sglowstickupforsomebody/tocheerforsomebody)combinestheChinesewiththeEnglishword.TheInternetcatchwordsisoriginallyusedtoexpressloveforsingers,nowitcanbeusedtoexpressapprovalandsupportforsomebody.Therefore,inthefuture,moreandmoreChineseInternetcatchwordswillberecognizedbymorepeoplewiththeincreasinglyfrequentinterculturalcommunications.
