Abstract

Numberisanorganicpartoflanguagewhichisembodiedwithdifferentculturalbackground.Idiomswithnumbersareglitteringgemsoftheculturalhouseofhumanbeingsandtheessenceofnationalculture.Theyarefulloffiguresofspeechandloadedwithculturalconnotations,reflectingtheculturaldifferenceofdifferentnationalities.

Thispapermainlyintroducestheconceptoflanguageandtherelationshipbetweenlanguageandculture,thetypesofnumericalidiomsinlanguagesandsemanticfeaturesinChineseandEnglish,anddifferentculturalconnotationsindifferentnationalitiesandbackgroundtorealizethedifferentculturalconnotationsindifferentnationalitiesandbackgroundbymakingacomparisonofnumericalidiomsdifferencesbetweenEnglishandChinese.Suchkindofcomparisoncanbeofimportancenotonlyinunderstandingthemeaningsofsuchidioms，butalsointranslationandthecross-culturalactivity.

摘要

数字是语言的一个有机组成部分，在不同的文化背景下，数字被赋予以不同的文化内涵。

而数字习语，是民族文化的核心和精华，具有强烈的文化特征，反映出了不同民族的文化个性。

本文主要介绍了语言与文化的概念、关系，英汉数字习语的类型及特点，以及英汉数字习语在不同民族心理、神话、宗教中的文化内涵。

通过对英汉数字习语进行对比分析，探究不同的民族心理和文化背景，从数字习语的角度对比分析中西文化差异，更深刻地理解人类语言和思维中最内在的本质。

这不但有利于我们更深层次地了解中西文化在数字文化差异中的表现形式，而且有助于推动翻译学和跨文化交际学的研究。

1.Introduction

Itiswellrecognizedthatlanguageisanintegralpartofcultureandthechiefwaybywhichcross-culturalcommunicationstakeplace.Therefore,languageisbothapartofcultureandmediumthroughwhichtheotherpartsofcultureareexpressed.Languageplaysanimportantroleinthesustainabledevelopmentofculture,withoutwhichtherewouldbenoculturedescendingfromancienttimes.Idiomsareglitteringgemsoftheculturalhouseofhumanbeingsandtheessenceofnationalculture.BothEnglishandChineselanguagesareswarmedwithidiomsofwidevarietiesandtheyappearinallkindsofliteraryworksaswellasinpeople’sdailylife.Usually,idiomsarefulloffiguresofspeechandloadedwithculturalconnotations,sotheyaredifficultforforeignlanguagelearnerstounderstand.Numberisanorganicpartoflanguage.RichdatarevealsthatthereareagreatnumberofnumericalidiomsinbothEnglishandChinese.However,differenthistoricalandculturalsettings,theconnotationsofnumbersinonelanguagedonotalwayscoincidewiththoseinanother.Peoplealsousedifferentnumberstoexpressthesamefeelingorfigurativemeaning.

ThecomparativestudyofEnglishandChinesenumericalidiomsisarelativelynewtopicbothathomeandabroad.InChina,thestudiesofnumericalidiomsareconcentratedonfiveaspects:

（2）Grammarperspective,whichmainlytalksaboutthestructuresandgrammarofEnglishnumericalidioms.（TangHua,1998）

（3）Rhetoricalperspective,whichintroducessomeimportantrhetoricalfeaturesinnumericalidioms.（WangZhiwei,1999）

（4）Translationperspective,whichfindssometranslationskillsinnumericalidioms.（ChenLinxia,1999）

（5）Cultureperspective,whichanalysesculturalconnotationsofnumericalidiomsindifferentnationalitiesandbackground.（XiongYinchun,2007）

Atabroad,theresearchersmainlystudythefeaturesofidioms,suchasSmith（1925）,B.Fraser（1970）andC.F.Hockett.

ThepresentpaperaimstomakethecomparativestudyofEnglishandChinesenumericalidiomsinnationalpsychology,mythologyandreligionwhichcanfacilitatetheunderstandingofdifferentculturesandtheessenceofthelanguageofthatculture.What’smore,itbenefitsbetterunderstandingoftheculturalpsychologyoftwonations,whichisconducivetocross-culturalcommunication.
