课题研究的目的和意义：

目的：

本课题研究以分析英语中源于《希腊神话》的词汇为主要目的，试图较深

入的了解英语中源于《希腊神话》的词汇的分类组成和这种词源现象。

旨在分析

该类词汇以了解其在英语中各个领域的用途，以及对其他英语词源进行更进一步

的了解。

意义：

此课题的分析研究对于语言学中英语词汇词源的了解与学习有着重要的意

义。

通过分析英语中源于《希腊神话》的词汇，我们可以对英语词汇有一个更深

的认识与了解。

对于研究英语词汇的其他词源也有重要意义。

国外同类课题研究现状及发展趋势：

国外：

《希腊神话》作为西方文化两大源头之一，一直是国外学者研究的热点

课题。

LorenaStookey在2004年出版的ThematicGuidetoWorldMythology提出了

希腊神话对于西方文化和英语本身的巨大影响。

ClaudeCalame在2003年出版的

MythandHistoryofinAncientGreece中首次提出了希腊神话对于英语词汇的影响

并对其进行了详细的分析举例。

HaroldNewman在2005年出版的AGenealogical

ChartofGreekMythology中将英语对于西方文化、英语以及英语词汇的影响作了

详细和总结性的述。

国：

在国的希腊神话研究领域中，许多高校教师将其与英语词汇和语言学进

行结合，研究其在英语词汇语言中的应用。

1995年，危鸣辉与建新发表了《英

语中希腊神话词汇的用法初探》，第一次总结归纳了希腊神话典故在英语词汇中的运用。

随后，钱莉和兰英在1998年的《社会科学论坛》发表了《浅谈希腊神话对英美文化的影响》，提出了希腊神话对西方文化的巨大影响。

2002年，彩芬和彩玉发表了论文《希腊神话对现代英语文化的影响》，提出了希腊神话对于英美文学的影响并着重表述了其对英语词产生的重要作用。

本文对这一课题的研究与HaroldMewman的相关研究较为类似，但较之更为详细，更加强调希腊神话对于英语词汇的影响及该类词汇的分类和应用。

课题研究的主要容和方法，研究过程中的主要问题和解决办法：

主要容：

本文首先说明希腊神话对于西方文化，尤其是对于英语语言的发展以

及英语词汇发展的重要性。

之后在文章的主要部分，通过对希腊神话的了解举出

一些英语中源于《希腊神话》词汇的例子并加以分析。

之后的部分对该类词汇进

行详细的分类，再对其用法进行分类比较和分析。

主要方法：

1、调查法：

通过研究有关《希腊神话》各类资料进行课题研究。

2、文献研究法：

通过调查有关《希腊神话》近期及以前的各类资料文献，形成

对希腊神话的大体研究方向上的了解，进而通过该方法进行课题研究。

主要问题：

1、对于《希腊神话》的了解程度不够深，对于其中的一些神话故事理解不透彻。

使得对于其在英语中相对应的词汇把握不到位。

2、关于《希腊神话》的资料较为庞杂，且英文资料较少，在撰写英文论文的过

程中会造成一定困难。

解决方法：

1、遇到问题，及时地与指导老师沟通，请教指导老师，并积极与同学讨论，研

读相关文献

2、认真上网查阅相关的资料以及到图书馆查阅期刊及文献资料，细致探讨和挖

掘文中涉及到的词汇。

3、认真研究相关语言理论，围绕主题更细致地从多个角度分析课题。

Abstract:

TheGreekMythologyisoneoftheoriginofwesterncultureandithassignificantimpactsonalmosteveryaspectofwesternculture,especiallyEnglishitself.ThereisahugeamountofwordsinEnglishoriginatingfromtheGreekMythology.Ontheotherhand,vocabularyplaysanimportantroleinlearningEnglish.Inconclusion,itisofgreatsignificanttocarryonaresearchonEnglishwordswhichoriginatefromtheGreekMythology.ThispaperanalysesthesewordsbyfirstlystatingtheimportantrolewhichtheGreekMythologyplaysinEnglishwordsandtheinfluencestheGreekMythologyputonthewesternculture,thenthepaperwillshowyoutheclassificationofthesewordsandexploretheapplicationsofthem,aimingatprovidinghelpforEnglishleanertocomprehend,memorizewordsinabetterway.

1.Introduction

TheWesternculturehastwoheadstreams,oneistheHellenicculture,theotheristheHebrewculture.TheGreekMythologyofHellenicculturehasasignificantinfluenceonEnglish.ItappearsthatEnglishlanguageabsorbpartofthewordsfromtheGreekMythologyintheexpressionofEnglishwords,thesewordsareresolvableortraceablewords.TheinformationincludedbythesepedigreescannotonlyhelptheEnglishlearnerstounderstandthemeaningofeveryparticularwordinamorepreciseway,increasetheinterestofmemorizingwords,butalsocanspeciallyrecordanddescribethedifferencesandcommunicationbetweenEnglishandtheHellenicculture,whichexpresseshistoricandentertaining.TheRomanMythologyisalwaysconnectedwiththeGreekMythology,ithasaverymuchthesamestorywiththeGreekMythologyexceptthenamesofthedeities.TheRomanMythologyandtheGreekMythologynurturetheEnglishwordsjustliketheHippocrenefromthefairytale.TherecomesoutalotofbeautifulandmovingtalesaboutEnglishwordsfromtheHippocrene,whichstrengthenthevitalityofEnglish.

2.TheGreekMythologyInfluencesWesternCultureandEnglishWords

TheGreekMythology,astheoralorliteralmythologyaboutthedeities,heroes,natureandhistoryoftheuniverseoftheancientGreeks.It’sthespiritualproductoftheprimitiveclansocietyandalsotheearliestliteraryformofEurope.TheGreekMythologyemergedaboutbefore8thcenturyB.C.TheGreekMythologyformeditsbasicscaleonthebasisoftheorallypassesonprimarilybetweentheancientGreeks.ThesetaleswererecordedintheHomer’sEpicandpoems,dramas,history,philosophywritingsoftheancientGreek.ThelatergenerationsarrangedthesetalesintotheGreekMythologytoday,itisdividedintostoriesofthedeitiesandthelegendofheroes.

2.1TheGreekMythologyInfluencesWesternCulture

Astimegoeson,theancientGreekMythologygraduallyspreadtoEurope,andbecameoneoftheimportantheadstreamsofwesternsocietyandwesternculturedevelopment.TheGreekMythologyhasahugeimpactonmanyaspectsofwesternsocietyespeciallyduringtheRenaissanceandtheperiodafterit.WecannowfindtheaffectandheritageoftheGreekMythologyinideology,culture,languageandliteratureandotheraspects.

TheenormousimpactwhichtheGreekMythologybringtowesternlanguagesismainlyshowupinwords.ThereareahugenumberofphrasesandwordsbaseontheGreekMythology.ThesephrasesandwordsareextremelyvividandflexiblebecausetheyhavestoriesfromtheGreekMythologytobethebackgroundinformation.InEnglish,morethan1,000wordsofthiskindformawonderfulvocabularyworld.Thesesphrasesandwordsmayjustbesimplenamesofpeople,deities,placesorplantswhentheyfirstcombinewithEnglish.However,themeaningsofthesephrasesandwordshavebeenchangedandgetdeeperduringthelongprocessofhistoricaldevelopment.AbigpartofthesephrasesandwordslosttheirbackgroundinformationoftheGreekMythologyandturnintonormalEnglishwords.

AsoneoftheoriginsofEuropeanandAmericanliterature,theGreekMythologyhasahugeimpactonEuropeanandAmericanliterature,thisimpacthasbeendeeplybrandedintheirnationality.TheeffectoftheGreekMythologystartedintheRenaissanceperiod.TheGreekMythologyhadinfiltratedeveryaspectofliteratureduringthatperiod.Theartofpoetry,painting,sculpturingandbuilding,eventhefieldofrecentmovies,theyalldrawnutritionfromtheGreekMythologytogetideologicalinspiration.ThemodernnewsreportsoftencitethehumanityknowledgefromtheGreekMythologytomakethereportmoreattractive.

Sincethefilmmakingtechnologyhasbeeninvented,thetentacleoftheGreekMythologyspreadtothisnewfield.Therearemorethan50movieswhichusedtheGreekMythologyastheirthemesinthelastcentury.ThemoviesbasedontheGreekMythologyhaveattractedahugeamountofaudiencewiththehelpofnewdevelopedtechnologyinthisdecadeof21stcentury.Forexample,Immortals,ClashoftheTitans,Troy,thesemoviesclearlydescribethecomplexrelationshipbetweenthedeitiesfromtheGreekMythology.TheGreekMythologyprovidesplentyofliteralthemesformoderncreationofmovies.Themessuchasbetrayal,revengeandsearchingforimmortalsoulsareessentialelementsofthemoviesinthiskind.Withthedreamysceneriesmadebymoderntechnology,themoviesaboutGreekMythologyownepicvisualeffect,andtherestartsaninternationallearningoftheGreekMythology.

2.2TheGreekMythologyInfluencesEnglishWords

ThedeitiesandtheirstoriesintheGreekMythologyaretheoriginofmanyEnglishwords.

ThebasicphrasesandwordseffectoftheGreekMythologymainlybehaveinthefoundationandcausesduringtheformingofthesewordsandphrases.WecanfindthemotivationsofmanywordsandphrasesintheGreekMythology.

ThereisthegoddessofdestinynamedFateintheGreekMythology,wehavefatefordestinyinmodernEnglish;thereisthegoddessofreverberationnamedEcho,wehaveechoforreverberationinmodernEnglish;thereisthegoddessofrainbownamedIris,wehaveirisforrainbowinmodernEnglish;thereistheriverofdisrememberingcalledLethe,wehavelethefordisrememberinmodernEnglish;thereistheHeliconMountainswherethegoddessofliteratureandartnamedMuselivein,wehaveheliconfortheoriginofpoetryinspirationinmodernEnglish;thereisthegoddessoffearnamedPan,wehavepanforfearinmodernEnglish.

TheplacenamesbelongtopropernounsinEnglish,theyarealsoanimportantpartofEnglishphrasesandwords.SomeEnglishplacenamesoriginatefromtheGreekMythology.ThenameofEuropecomesfromtheGreekgoddessoffarmingnamedEuropa.Shewasabeautifulprincessofthesecularworld,thenZeushappenedtoloveherandtheyhadachildatthisveryland,andthat’swhythelandisnamedafterher.WeallknowAthensasthecapitalofGreece.AthenaisoneofthemajordeitiesintheGreekMythology.Shechargestalentandskill.AccordingtotheGreekMythologysheandPoseidonhadchosenalandinthesouthernpartofAtticapeninsulaofGreece
