IKEA’snameesfromKamprad’sinitials(I.K.)andtheplacewherehegrewup(‘E’and’A’).TodayIKEAisknownforitsmodern,minimalistfurniture,butitwasnotafurniturepanyinthebeginning.Rather,IKEAsoldallkindsofmiscellaneousgoods.

Kamprad’swaresincludedanythingthathecouldsellforprofitsatdiscountedprices,includingwatches,pensandstockings.

IKEAfirstbegantosellfurniturethroughamail-ordercataloguein1947.ThefurniturewasalldesignedandmadebymanufacturersnearKamprad’shome.Initialsaleswereveryencouraging,soKampradexpandedtheproductline.FurniturewassuchasuccessfulaspectofthebusinessthatIKEAbecamesolelyafurniturepanyin1951.

In1953IKEAopeneditsfirstshowroominAlmhult,Sweden.IKEAisknowntodayforitsspaciousstoreswithfurnitureinattractivesettings,butintheearly1950s,peopleorderedfromcatalogues.Thusresponsetothefirstshowroomwasoverwhelmingpeoplelovedbeingabletoseeandtrythefurniturebeforebuyingit.Thisledtoincreasedsalesandthepanycontinuedtothrive.By1955,IKEAwasdesigningallitsownfurniture.

In1956Kampradsawamandisassembling(拆卸)atabletomakeiteasiertotransport.Kampradwasinspired.Themanhadgivenhimagreatideaflatpackaging.FlatpackagingwouldmeanlowershippingcostsforIKEAandlowerpricesforcustomers.IKEAtrieditandsalessoared.Theproblemwasthatpeoplehadtoassemblefurniturethemselves,butovertime,eventhisgrewintoanadvantageforIKEA.Nowadays,IKEAisoftenseenashavingconnotations(内涵)ofself-sufficiency.Thisimagehasdonewondersforthepany,leadingtobettersalesandcontinuedexpansion.
