For100years,Noah’booktaughtchildrenhowtoread,spell,andpronouncewords.ItwasthemostpopularAmericanbookofitstime.BenFranklinusedNoah’sbooktoteachhisgranddaughtertoread.

WhenNoahwas43,hestartedwritingthefirstAmericandictionary.HedidthatbecauseAmericansindifferentpartsofthecountryspelled,pronouncedandusedwordsdifferently.HethoughtthatallAmericansshouldspeakinthesameway.HealsothoughtthatAmericansshouldnotspeakandspelljustliketheEnglish.NoahusedAmericanspellingslikecolorinsteadoftheEnglishcolourandmusicinsteadofmusick.HealsoaddedAmericanwordsthatweren'tinEnglishdictionarieslikeskunkandsquash.Hespentover27yearswritinghisdictionary.WhenNoahaccomplished(完成)hisdictionaryin1828,attheageof70,thefirstAmericandictionarycameout.Ithad70,000wordsinit.
