TheBeginningofTimeandaRemarkableManCalledStephenHawking

Ifyouhaveeventhoughtabouthowtheuniversebeganandwhethertimehasabeginningoranending,thenyoushouldknowabouta55-year-oldEnglishmancalledStephenHawking.

Why?

BecauseheisconsideredtobeoneofthebrainiestmenintheworldandtobethemodernsuccessorofAlbertEinstein.

Stephenhasspenthislifestudyingandthinkingabouttheoriginsftheuniverseandhowitcanbeexplainedbyusingthemoderntheoriesofphysicssuchasrelativityandquantummechanics.Hisdiscoveriesandhisscientificproposalshavebeenrevolutionary.Peoplecallhimagenius.

Justasamazingisthefastthatsincehisearlytwenties,hehasbeensufferingfromanincurablediseaseofthenervoussystemwhichhasaffectedhismovementsandhisspeech.But,fortunately,althoughhemustuseawheelchairandothertechnicalaidstodothings,hisbrainfunctionsperfectly.Indeed,itfunctionsbetterthanthevastmajorityofpeople’s.So,inspriteofaseveredisability,hehasmadetremendouscontributionstoourunderstandingofouruniverse.

 

SowhatdoesStephenthinkaboutthebeginningofourworld?

Well,hethinksthatitbeganaroundfifteenbillionyearsago.Healsothinksthatouruniversewasprobablycreatedbyanenormousexplosion,a“BigBang”.Thisisaviewheldbymanycosmologists(scientistswhostudytheuniverse).

ButscientistsholddifferentviewaboutwhattheuniversewaslikebeforetheBigBang.SomepeoplethinkthatthereisnowaythatmodernphysicscanexplainorpredictanythingbeforetheBigBang.ManyotherpeoplethinkthattheBigBangmusthavebeentheworkofGod.

StephenHawkinghashisownviewonwhattheuniversewaslikebeforethebigbang.Hehassuggestedthat,yes,wecansaythattheuniversebeganatoneparticularpoint(abigbang).But,thisonepointwasjustanordinarypointintimelike,say,theNorthPoleisapointonthesmoothsurfaceoftheearth.Itwasnotapointofrealbeginning,justapoint.

 

Stephenbelievesthatifwecanuseourpresentknowledgeofthelawsofphysicstounderstandhowtheuniversebean,thenwewillnothavetobelievethata“God”oraspiritualforcemadetheBigBang.
