  Intimesofanguish,wecanfindsolaceinart.Agreatmoviecanalwaysofferyousomekindofpowertofaceyourownproblem.Andthisonedidagoodjob.Itbringsusatoughhero,WilliamWallace,leaderoftheScottishresistanceforcesagainstEngland’srule.Althoughheisdeadatlast,hisspirithadledhispeopletofightandgetfreedom.Thismeaningfulworkhastouchedsomanyheartsbyitssignificancethemeandcontent.

  ThethemeofthisworkcanmainlybeseenoverthegrowingimageofWilliamWallace.Firstweseehischildhood.HisfatherwaskilledbytheEnglishintruder,whichmaydefinitelyleaveascaronhisheart.Withthisgreathatred,whenhesawhiswifekilledbytheenemies,everythingstuckdeepdownhisheartwasreleasedallofasuddenwithmagnificentpower.Sointhefightingscene,weseeawarriordaredhislifewavingthesword.Itisacommonwonderwherehiscourageisfrom.Let’ssay,ifitisanordinaryperson,wholosthisparentssincehe’sveryyoung,hemaynothavetheconvictiontogrowupasahero.However,heroesareasheroesare.

  Wallace’srevolutionwassignificant,seenfrommanyaspects,withgreatobstaclesfromhiscountrymen,aswellasenemies.ManyScottishnobleslenthimonlygrudgingsupportasmostofthemweremoreconcernedwithwealthandtitlesthanthefreedomofthecountry.Infact,theScottishleadersareinfavorofrevolt-ornot-dependingonEnglishbribes.Wallace,bycomparison,isamanofhonor,incorruptibleandrighteous.Hewasknightedandproclaimed‘guardianandhighprotectorofScotland’,butasmuchasherailedagainsttheScottishnobles,submittedtoEdwardI,KingofEngland,hewasastonishedandinshocktodiscoverthetreacheryoftheleadingScotcontenderforthethrone—Robert,theEarlofBruce—towhomheconfided,‘Thepeoplewouldfollowyou,ifyouwouldonlyleadthem.’SophieMarceauisexquisiteasthedistressedprincessIsabellaofFrancewhoendsupfallinginlovewithWallace,warninghimoutofseveraltraps.CatherineMcCormackisastunningbeautywhoignitesWallace’srevolution.PatrickMcGoohanischilling,brutal,andviciousastheruthlessEdwardI,knownbythenickname‘Longshanks.’Thiskingremainssimplytheembodimentofevil.WhileAngusMcFadyenmovesasanoblemantornbetweenhisconscienceandpoliticalaspiration,andBrendanGleesonbringsstrengthandhumortohisroleastherobustHamish,DavidO’HaraisveryeffectiveasthecrazyIrishmanwhoprovidesmuchofthefilm’scomicrelieffromeventhemosttensedmoments.MelGibsonhasreasontobeproudofthiswork.Itisamotionpicturethatdarestobeexcessive…Gibsonpresentspassionatelythemostspaciouslyimpressivebattles(yetstagedforfilms)evenexcessively,anditishispassionandexcessthatmakethemotionpicturegreat.Thehorrorandfutilityofmassedhand-to-handcombatsareexcitingratherrepulsive.Itisepicfilm-makingatitsgloriousbest.ThismoviefocusesonthehumansideofWallace,acharacterthatissoimmense,sointelligent,andsopassionate,exploringthedefinitionsofhonorandnobility,pushingustofollowtheherointohisstruggleagainstinjusticeandoppression.Andthisisthepowerofahero.

  Also,thismovieisared-bloodedbattleepic.NotmuchisknownaboutWallace,knownasBraveheart,exceptthataccordingtoanoldepicpoem,heunifiedtheclansofScotlandandwonfamousbattlesagainsttheEnglishbeforebeingcaptured,torturedandexecutedasatraitor.

  Wallacecried,ashisbodywasstretchedontherack.Thatisn’texactlybasedonfact(theconceptofpersonalfreedomwasaconceptnotmuchcelebratedin1300),butitdoesn’tstopGibsonfrommakingithisdyingcry.ItfitsinwiththewholeglorioussweepofBraveheart,whichisanactionepicwiththespiritoftheHollywoodswordplayclassicsandthegrungyferocityof“TheRoadWarrior”。

Whatpeoplearegoingtorememberfromthefilmarethebattlescenes,whicharefrequent,bloodyandviolent.Justfromatechnicalpointofview,Braveheartdoesabrilliantjobofmassingmenandhorsesforlarge-scalewarfareonfilm.Gibsondeployswhatlooklikethousandsofmenonhorseback,aswellasfootsoldiers,archersanddirtytricksspecialists,andyethisbattlesequencesdon’tturnintoconfusingcrowdscenes:

Weunderstandthestrategy,andweenjoythetacticsevenwhilewedoubtsomeofthem.
