Homeworkhasneverbeenterriblypopularwithstudentsandevenmanyparents,butin

recentyearsithasbeenparticularlyscorned.Schooldistrictsacrossthecountry,most

recentlyLosAngelesUnified,arerevisingtheirthinkingonhiseducationalritual.

Unfortunately,L.A.Unifiedhasproducedaninflexiblepolicywhichmandatesthatwiththe

exceptionofsomeadvancedcourses,homeworkmaynolongercountformorethan10%

ofastudent'sacademicgrade.

Thisruleismeanttoaddressthedifficultythatstudentsfromimpoverishedorchaotic

homesmighthaveincompletingtheirhomework.Butthepolicyisunclearand

contradictory.Certainly,nohomeworkshouldbeassignedthatstudentscannotdowithout

expensiveequipment.Butifthedistrictisessentiallygivingapasstostudentswhodonot

dotheirhomeworkbecauseofcomplicatedfamilylives,itisgoingriskilyclosetothe

implicationthatstandardsneedtobeloweredforpoorchildren.
