TransitionsandConnectiveWords

Examplesillustratingtheiruse

Transitionscarryyourreaderfromphrasetophrase,sentencetosentence,paragraphtoparagraph,andthroughthemajordivisionsofyourarticle.Althoughyoumaybeabletowriteperfectlyclearlywithoutusingtransitionwords,theyhelpreadersknowwhattheyarereadingabout,howtheygotthere,andwherethethoughtisleadingthem.

Inearlydrafts,itisbettertooverusetransitions;youcanalwayscutthemlater.Beover-specificatfirst.

Usetransitionalwordstoguideyourreaderthrougheachstepofthearticle:

First...,next...,then...,finally....

Apparently...,forexample...,butactually...,inconclusion....

Sometimes...,butnotalways....

Ontheonehand...,ontheotherhand...,insummary....

Because...,therefore....

Usetransitionalwordstopointouthowthecurrentthoughtisrelatedtothepreviousone:
